The weather is heating up finally in the northeast and the topic of the day was summer concerts. Check out this video demonstrating Gateway 60 teen/adult. It is loaded with appropriate topics for these users to have a conversation with friends and family.

MASTER the Core-
M- Meaningful activities. Being client directed is always a good approach to language. Often what we want to talk about is not what they want to talk about. In this video my student uses Gateway 40 and core vocabulary to talk about the upcoming weekend. Again, he doesn't have to leave the core page to get his point across, and actually gets a little creative. His language is not completely grammatically correct but because he does use core vocabulary it is a complete thought and one that tells me exactly what he is going to do this weekend

Core vocabulary is most frequently used words that can be utilized across environments. It is very important to teach core vocabulary and not only topic specific vocabulary to our AAC users. My challenge for everyone in 2015 is to MASTER the Core! This is a slide from a presentation done for DynaVox on Gateway. Go to the following link to view the entire presentation and earn ASHA CEU's.

We will be discussing each part of MASTER the Core right here during the next week. Check back for great Tx ideas!

The new year is upon us and we are all back doing what we love, helping people communicate. I think a new year is an appropriate time to share "The Communication Bill of Rights" put forth in 1992 by the National Joint Committee for the Communication Needs of Persons with Severe Disabilities. If you have seen it before it bears looking at again and if you have never seen it, you should. It really speaks to communication is a right and not an option. Print it, post in your office, classrooms and homes, share it at a meeting with colleagues, parents, and associates. Follow the link below to the ASHA website to read "The Communication Bill of Rights."
