Looking forward to April next year, the next long term support version of Ubuntu is shaping up nicely.

Its sad that a few vocal people seeking publicity for themselves make classic sites like Distrowatch look irrelevant.

Only journalists looking for distro stats use Distrowatch these days. Maybe sad but it's true.

New! Ubuntu 11.10 allows you to test your install CD or USB straight after you have created it, neat!

I used the Startup Disk creator and the downloaded Ubuntu 11.10 on my laptop with Ubuntu 11.10 already installed. I created a Live Ubuntu system on a 4Gb USB memory stick and am now given an option to test it out as soon as the files and bootloader have copied across. The test fires up QEmu in a small window and allows you to run or install Ubuntu in a virtual machine.

I tested this out by opening up firefox and browsing to slashdot.org and it all just worked, network and all (I am a local pub running an install party).

I also installed the indicator-workspaces package from the Ubuntu Software Center. When you run indicator-workspaces (I ran it from a terminal window) you can set the number of workspaces you feel you need. An indicator stays in the top panel so you can change your mind as well as quickly jump between the workstations (if you forget Ctrl-Alt arrow-key keyboard shortcut).

Thank you.

Setting up the Extreme Startup workshop for Clojure, hope to run it at tomorrow's Clojure Exchange at SkillsMatter - it all seems to work.

The hardest part was setting up Ruby for the question server, as I mistakenly didnt use RVM at first, doh!! Using RVM it was a doddle to get the question server going on Ubuntu 11.10. Maybe I should look to write the question server in Clojure - once I have learnt some more Noir and Clojure :-)

Had a great time at the London Scala dojo last night, with an added bonus of some time with Phil Bagwell.

We tried something different this week, breaking up into teams to work on a larger problem. We collectively chose a Tweet analysis tool that could pull tweets in from the service via their API, processing those tweets so they were in a particular format for consumption by other services. The other services would look for particular information such as a certain stock and try doing some automated crowd source magic to show you what people were saying that was interesting.

Everything should be checked into the repository: http://www.assembla.com/code/lsug-dojo/git-9/nodes

Atlassian UK ambassador
Introduction
UK ambassador for Atlassian, creators of software development tools for agile developers and organisational change.  I work with customers and technical communities to promote great software development practices and collaborate on how to get the best out of development tools.

Originally from North Yorkshire, I have travelled and worked around Europe and am currently based in London.

I have provided consultancy services in Lean agile techniques for delivering software based solutions.  I also review articles and books for several content publishers.

In my spare geek time I build my own custom servers and laptop hardware and administer a number of Ubuntu Linux systems, offering training and support to the London and UK communities.
