Patience is how I do it.

I figure the more time I spend with photography, chances are I am going to get better at it. This applies easily to things like landscapes.

Wild animals are a whole different story.

I am always on the quest for pictures of timid birds, such as this great blue heron. I've owned birds as pets, and I know they recognize me easily. I take that thinking into the wild with bird photography.... and venture to the same places over and over again. I've noted that after enough patience, I can get the shot I was going for. This has worked for hummingbirds as well.

For larger mammals I just do my best to project I am safe to be around and that I mean no harm. Animals are pretty sensitive, just as us human animals are.

Tiny Owl

Taken in 2009, this beauty posed for me is a small pine tree, not far from where I live in Niagara, Ontario, Canada.  Using my tripod extended to the max for a good angle, I focused, and took the image using live view.

This bird is about the size of a pop can, and such a wonder of nature. It hunts small mice, and rests out of sight from other raptors to protect itself.  A few shots, and leave it be!, respect nature, so these animals and birds can live on for others to enjoy.

Juveniles on the Nile

Recently myself and some friends spent a couple of weeks in East Africa, during which we stayed a couple of nights on the banks of the River Nile near Jinja, Uganda. One evening I got chatting to a local boatman who offered to take us for a short trip on the river before darkness set in. After negotiating a price (and stocking up with a few drinks for sundowners!) we set out.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much we saw in such a short time. Local fishermen packing up their boats and nets for the day, people washing themselves, their clothes, or even their motorbikes in the river, young children waving frantically to us with big smiles on their faces. There were a few small huts dotted along the banks that were actually restaurants serving fresh fish. All the while we were surrounded with beautiful rugged scenery.

On top of that the bird life far exceeded my expectations. Some of the trees provided roosting sites for hundreds of cormorants, egrets, storks and darters. Various kingfisher and heron species were in abundance too. New for me was seeing a pair of adult African fish eagles with their two juveniles on a small rocky island. Unfortunately the two adults flew off before we got anywhere near them. The children however were a little more obliging!
