Damask & Stencils
Classic patterns give subtle interest to rooms when applied in damask. Stencil designs are traditionally used on ceilings, walls, floors and furniture. Often times, they can be used for designs on kitchen backsplashes and hoods over stovetops and the stencils can even be applied on cement floors. For a touch of whimsy, a trompe l’œil secret passage was stenciled by Periwinkle Skies in the ‘young masters’ bedroom for the “Mansion in May” at Ellerslea in Morris Township, New Jersey.

The color, pattern and scale of each design creates vastly different effects when stenciling a room. Periwinkle Skies has stenciled damasks, architectural trompe l’œil details and beautiful designs in dining rooms, master bedrooms and powder rooms in Bergen, Essex, Morris, and Monmouth counties in New Jersey.

Frescoes: by Periwinkle Skies
Fresco is the Italian word for fresh and is a type of mural painting. It is a long and involved technique consisting of three layers of differently textured lime plaster followed by a final finish. The top layer is composed of lime-tolerant pigments dissolved in lime water, and is painted onto the final plaster layer while the plaster is still wet. Success depends on good preparation, since every brush stroke is permanent.  Lime plaster dries by a process of carbonation. The pigments get caught up in this process and become integrated with the surface of the plaster, making fresco an extremely durable way of adding color to a wall. Examples of this technique can be found around the world, including Europe, China, India, and Russia. Although examples still survive from the sixteenth century BC in Greece and Morocco, the technique saw its full flourishing in Renaissance Italy in the hands of the likes of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael.

Periwinkle Skies has adorned wine cellars, restaurants, couture shops and residences with murals and frescoes in all over New Jersey, as well as in Connecticut and New York. View more of our work at www.periwinkleskies.com

A wonderful, yet often untouched canvas is the ceiling. From simple to dramatic, ceilings can transform a room and set the perfect mood. Periwinkle Skies has created gold embossed designs and painted murals on ceilings at Eagle Oaks Country Club in Farmingdale, NJ; The Villa at Mountain Lakes catering hall in Mountain Lakes, NJ; Skylands Manor at New Jersey State Botanical Gardens in Ringwood, NJ; as well as residences in northern New Jersey and central Connecticut. Our ceiling artistry ranges from plaster frescoes to clouded ceilings to delicately painted metal leaf designs.

Millwork & Wall Glazes: Periwinkle Skies
Periwinkle Skies has painted and glazed cabinetry, furniture, and millwork in residential and commercial spaces in Northern and Central New Jersey, Manhattan and Long Island. Some of the more popular finishes that we have applied are striated, gilded, antiqued, distressed, marbled, grained, and glazed and wiped line work, as well as metal patina. Often times we have applied textured plaster finishes and embossed designs to fireplace surrounds; these subtle changes can give a stunning effect.

Wall glazes range from translucent to opaque, smooth to a subtle texture. Some of the natural finishes employ limewash, quark, casein, clay or chalk. Designs or stencils are often combined with wall finishes to further enhance a space.

We use environmentally-friendly, durable materials and offer a fee structure that is designed to best meet each client’s plan of action. Contact us for a complimentary 45 minute initial meeting at 973-865-1966. Please visit www.periwinkleskies.com for more photos of existing work.

Faux Bois & Marbre
Painting surfaces to resemble wood is known as faux bois or graining. It is especially alluring on architectural details, floors grained with the addition of painted inlaid designs, cabinetry and furniture grained in fine woods and painted with the look of inlaid bronze.

The art of faux marbre, or marbling, traces back to painted marble pottery from 1600 BC during the Mycenaean Age. Popularity resurged during Europe’s Renaissance and Baroque periods—where marble was available, but marbling was considered a specialty. During the 18th Century, archaeologists unearthed 2,000-year-old wall frescoes in Pompeii and Herculaneum that were framed with faux marbre. Those archeological findings stimulated a renewed interest in antiquity—leading to the Neo-Classical movement and a desire for painted marble.

Marbling became popular with architects over the centuries since the look of marble was desired, but some structures were unable to support its weight. Fine examples of faux marbre can be seen in Saint Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. Since the 17th Century, marbling on fireplaces, tabletops, floors and woodwork has been popular in affluent homes.
