I'm the Sports Director at KMBC 9 News in Kansas City, Mo., covering the Chiefs, Royals, Sporting Kansas City and our area college and high school teams.
Introduction

Johnny Kane joined the KMBC team in September 2011 as Sports Director. Prior to coming to Kansas City, he spent the past five years working in Topeka, Kan. Johnny is a Midwest native having grown up in Delta, Ohio.

The highlight of his career to this point was covering KU’s 2008 NCAA Championship in San Antonio, Texas. Another memorable experience came in 2004 when Smarty Jones’ bid for horse racing’s Triple Crown came up a length short.

While sports are his primary order of business, he also has knack for the political arena. He’s covered three presidential visits by George W. Bush, speeches by George H.W. Bush and Bob Dole, and an address from Gen. David Petraeus when he was serving as Maj. General of the 101st Airborne Division.

He began his career at WKAG-TV in Hopkinsville, Ky. where he covered sports on both sides of the Kentucky and Tennessee border. Johnny earned a Bachelor of Science in Journalism in 2004 from E.W. Scripps at Ohio University.

Johnny is the middle child in a family of five who believes that a strong work ethic speaks volumes about a person. He believes that every journalist should adhere to the philosophy of being the first to be right when reporting a story rather than the first to be first.
