In June 2013, a woman set herself on fire every three days in Herat, Afghanistan -- and that was an improvement from 2012, when the city's main hospital received a self-immolator every two days. The reason for women burning themselves alive, according to Afghanistan's presidential advisor on health affairs, is depression. Almost all self-immolation in Afghanistan follows marriage, with 70 percent of brides married against their will and half of them children 15 years or younger.

Learn more via Colors Magazine (http://bit.ly/1cmSjIe) and follow +Girls Not Brides for more information on ending child marriage.

In India, 1 woman is raped every 21 minutes, 1 woman is kidnapped every 14 minutes. Even though they make up 46% of the population in Delhi, women are considered and treated as a minority. #boardthebus aims to make the women acknowledge their rights and the responsibilities and exercise their power to make Delhi a safer place to live in.

From the 1st to the 7th of March, we’re asking women to come together, board a bus to their destination and show Delhi and the world - through pictures, video, audio and text - that they are reclaiming the space on public transport that is rightfully theirs. We hope to encourage women to not only travel by bus, but also to share their experience and motivate others to join them.

A not so fun fact: only 7 states didn't pass anti-immigrant laws in 2010 and 2011. http://motherjones.com/politics/2012/03/anti-immigration-law-database#database
We crunched the data behind the self-deportation crowd's spate of state laws, the private-prison industry's campaign spending, and more.

‎5 months on, Alabama's immigration law impacts the human rights of many. Immigrants are denied pay, Latinos are harassed & families live without water. http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/02/28/433529/alabama-immigration-law-injustice/
Since HB 56, Alabama’s extreme immigration law, went into effect last fall, children stayed home from school out of fear that their parents would be deported, and U.S.-born children have been denied f...

One of our favorite campaigns from last year: Deport the Statue used humor to tackle the serious issue of immigrant women's rights.

Have you seen it? Tell us what you think!

Human rights start with you.
Introduction
Breakthrough (www.breakthrough.tv) is a global human rights organization working to make violence and discrimination against women and girls unacceptable. Our mission is to prevent violence against women and girls by transforming the norms and cultures that enable it. We carry out this mission by building a critical mass of change agents worldwide — the Breakthrough Generation — whose bold collective action will deliver irreversible impact on the issue of our time. Working out of centers in India and the U.S., we create innovative, relevant multimedia campaigns, tools, and programs that reach individuals and institutions where they are, inspiring and equipping them to build a world in which all people live with dignity, equality, and justice. With programs challenging domestic violence, early marriage, gender-biased sex selection, sexual harassment, sexual assault, and more, our work enables a critical mass of change-makers to stand for human rights in their own spheres and beyond.
