starting to put together our social conference for the fall. the idea is the 'social operating system.' now that social has moved out of this interesting area and into all media, what does it mean for these industries. we're putting together a list of top-level speakers. we want to skip the panel format thing in favor of short, TED-like presentations, Q&As, debates, etc. who are some great people to target?

some good thoughts from a vc who backs a few twitter platform companies. he's in the fb-is-the-new-aol camp.
Mark Suster of GRP Partners explains why he is doubling down on Twitter and why Facebook is no more unassailable than AOL was in the 90's.

wait, yahoo's ad-sales problems are a result of the vogue for programmatic ad buying? the numbers there just don't add up, at least by my math. audience buying is definitely hurting many top-tier publishers -- i don't buy the rising-tide crowd -- but i don't think yahoo can just blame what the wall st crowd likes to call 'externalities.'

The Social Operating System: Social Media is no longer a stand-alone media discipline. It has moved beyond a department or a new media channel to become the underlying engine of media and how marketers connect with consumers.

yes, the irony of sharing this on a new social network...
Social media isn't that special anymore. In fact, it's a feature rather than a product, according to VC Roger McNamee. Plus: Google as a publisher, Pepsi drowns in ad impressions, and why brands hate ...

It's not as if there's a shortage of social media measurement tools- there are dozens, perhaps 100s of them. I assume they all lack the ability to correlate and compute true brand impact or pure ROI. Who, if anyone is getting close?

note: in the actual published version i thought better of using the word 'conundrum.' for whatever reason, our v special cms pulls the initial headline. anyway, the point is if you have trouble explaining what your company does, that's not a great sign.
The ad tech industry has never been hotter. But underneath the eye-popping valuations, there's a problem: an awful lot of companies struggle to explain in plain language what they do. Plus: Time's dig...
