Excitement? Of course! Nerves? Probably. Families are likely to experience these and many more feelings when they meet their adoptive child for the first time.

Children who joined their families through adoption may struggle with treating others with respect. Families can help their child develop respect for others through a variety of techniques.

A recent study shows that when parents discuss emotions and feelings with their internationally-adopted children, they make a huge difference in the child’s emotional understanding of themselves and others.

Our team, our families and the entire adoption community is better because of Dr. Karyn Purvis' deep commitment to providing hope and healing to children from hard places. We are deeply saddened by her loss, but her legacy will be felt for generations to come.

Adoptive parents need to be flexible and seek out reasons to say yes to their newly-adopted children.

With every adoption, as with anything worthwhile, there are challenges and rewards. Some families are up for the challenge of adopting an older child, feel called to meet this great need or simply feel that adopting an older child best meets their family’s season of life.

Is your family a good candidate to adopt an older child?

I am a client of MLJ Adoptions Inc. Prior to starting my adoption journey, I did a lot of research on how to find an agency and then a lot of research on each agency considered. I chose MLJ because they were Hague Accredited and came highly recommended. I am very confident that I made the right choice! MLJ is extremely committed to serving the best interests the children. They are very attentive to their clients as well and are very ethical. Communication with the staff at MLJ has been great. I receive regular updates from them and they are always very responsive. Whenever I reach out to them with a question or for an update I always get a response, usually quicker than I expected. They have a great education program and offer a wide variety of classes which has helped me in preparation for my adoption. I felt each class was worth taking and a great deal of valuable information was shared. “While We Wait” support groups are offered and through this I was able to meet other families that are adopting as well. The team at MLJ has extensive knowledge about international law and the laws and processes in each of the countries that they have programs in. They have established relationships with these countries and travel to each regularly. Their website allows clients to log on to a client site to download forms, obtain instructions for the process and register for classes which is very helpful. In addition to all of these services they hold cultural events and picnics for families that are still in the process and for the families that have already completed their adoptions. This is great because it gives families the opportunity to stay connected while they are going through this process and a great way for families to meet and keep in touch after their adoptions are complete. The staff at MLJ is truly committed to bringing families together through adoption. I highly recommend MLJ Adoptions!

My wife and I recently adopted a baby girl from the Democratic Republic of Congo using MLJ and were extremely pleased with the entire experience. Adoption, particularly international adoption, can be extremely complicated, costly, and unpredictable. Throughout the process MLJ did their best to keep us informed on our progress and, most importantly, helped bring our baby girl home safely and as soon as possible. If anyone has any questions about our experience with MLJ you can contact us (the Schulers) via MLJ.

They do everything they can to make sure your adopted child receives the best care and attention. When we traveled to the Congo we saw first hand that MLJ was the ONLY agency that knew what they were doing. Unlike other agencies they immediately took our child out of the orphanage and into a foster family -- made sure he had medical attention and was fed well until he arrived in the states. Their lawyers know the Congolese system and everything was done expeditiously and with great attention. Every step of the process was outlined. Every cost was itemized. There were ZERO surprises. The care was exceptional. They know they are dealing with emotional issues and children. We couldn't have asked for a better agency. They are beautiful, wonderful, smart people.

The staff at MLJ love what they do and it shows. They've endured the grueling process to become Hague approved and have attorneys on staff. Many of the members of MLJ are adoptive parents and empathize with their clients.
