Having talked to a lot of moms over the years (being a NICU nurse will do that for you, if nothing else), I have discovered that everybody's must have list is different. My must haves were a bouncy seat, a basic car seat, an umbrella stroller, little diaper bag (the smaller the better), and a little red Radio Flyer wagon that I used to drag all the other stuff - laundry, groceries, etc. from the car to the apartment while carrying the baby.
My son hated the swing and being swaddled/snug, (he also refused pacifies, just to prove he was contrary) and we didn't need a special baby food maker at all - just gave things a quick pulse in the everyday food processor. We kept a basic umbrella stroller in the car after he got too big to just carry when we went out, and he slept in our room or in whatever room I'd set up in for the day, so no need for a crackly-staticy monitor, either.
