The number of “build-to-rent” homes that have been built, are under construction or in the planning stages has risen by 30% in the past year, according to the Financial Times.

While London has more “build-to-rent” properties than other regions put together, it’s promising to see that areas outside the capital are beginning to catch up - including Manchester, Liverpool and Bristol.

The growth in the “build-to-rent” sector has been attributed the fact that it offers a way to generate a long-term income stream as well as helping meet housing targets, which is why councils and housing associations are increasingly partnering with developers on “build-to-rent” schemes.

How to resolve the UK’s housing crisis via The Guardian:

With the current housing market considered “broken” by many, including the Prime Minister, how can the government fix the problem?

According to economic editor Larry Elliott, one way of improving the crisis is to reform the 1961 Land Compensation Act:

“Reforming the 1961 act so that public-sector bodies can purchase land at less than its prospective residential use value makes sense because it would enable developers to get hold of land more cheaply and so build more affordable homes. Nor would it be an especially controversial move politically.”

Charlton: New contender for hottest London regeneration zone

Thanks to its strong established community, some excellent schools and fast transport links to central London, Charlton is tipped to be the ‘Next Big Thing’ in the London regeneration scene.

What’s more, there are plans to build up to 5,000 new homes, as well as shops and restaurants, on industrial land overlooking the Thames Barrier over the next 25 years.

As the Homes & Property article notes, “Greenwich council has designated Charlton Riverside as an ideal location for a new mixed-use urban development, and developers are starting to buy up land and bring forward schemes to build on it.”
