Ames Farm Honey
Bob’s Java Hut Family Stories : Vendor’s Edition: Ames Farm Honey
If you've ever wondered why a miel from Bob’s Java Hut is so tasty, it is because we start by using top tier ingredients. One of those ingredients is our local honey, direct from Ames Honey Farm in Delano, Minnesota. We asked Brian Fredericksen, the owner of Ames Farm, if we could come out and do a tour. He said yes and told us how excited he was to have us visit the land, bees, and honey at its source; which we found ourselves calling “beetopia”.
Inside the processing house, we learned about the entire operation from start to finish. Learning about the style of cultivation they use in order to glean the most honey out of each honey box and how each hive's honey is treated as a separate product. This method allows Ames to provide us with single source honey. The beehives are located specifically amongst very densely populated fields of clover, basswood or other native floral sources. This creates a bond between the bees and what comprises the majority of species of plants surrounding them for cultivation of pollen. Then when the bees produce honey it is richly flavored from its natural surroundings of that particular plant. Ames then packages each hive's honey separately in order to preserve that hive’s unique flavor. We were also lucky enough to get a taste for ourselves! We could really notice just how different each honey can be using his single source method. It reminded us very much of doing a wine tasting at a vineyard. Each label that gets placed onto the honey will also tell you exactly where the honey was cultivated down to the hive and year.
After we toured the facilities it was time to head out to the fields, where Brian walked us through what felt like paradise: open fields, tall basswood trees, and plenty of busy buzzing bees. We were taught how every part of the land is used in its most natural state in order to create the best environment for the bee’s to healthfully produce honey. It was an amazing experience to stand in the midst of all this movement and creation. Another aspect that we enjoyed about our tour with Ames Farm is that we were able to meet almost the entire team. Each one of them was as dedicated and proud of the Ames product as Brian is. We are so lucky to have the Ames Farm family become a part of the Bob’s Java Hut Family. We thank you so much for everything!

Bob’s Monthly Pour-Over Feature
Roaster: Cafe Grumpy
Roast: Shamba
Bob’s Java Hut has started a monthly rotating pour-over feature! We are hoping that with this menu addition we promote quality roasters from all over the United States who do not currently have a strong presence inside the Twin Cities coffee community, along with being a fun way to enjoy a delicious pour-over coffee.
This month our pour-over feature is from a roaster called Café Grumpy in Brooklyn New York. They are an exciting independent coffee roaster and café that Bob’s is thrilled to bring to Minneapolis.
Roaster:
Café Grumpy, Brooklyn New York
Roast:
Shamba
Flavor Profile:
The Shamba roast features strong bold flavors of Assam tea, tamarind, nectarine, and lavender.
If you would like to learn more about Café Grumpy please check out the Café Grumpy’s website. You will find amazing stories featuring their growers and suppliers along with other resources in ethical farming practices.

Bob’s Java Hut Family Stories: Vendors Edition: TeaSource

This week Liz, Brandon and Gretchen set off on a worldwide tea tasting experience at TeaSource headquarters right here in Minnesota.
Bob’s Java Hut was advised by B & W Specialty Coffee to check out TeaSource to supply a stellar tea selection, and what a great match it has been. Brandon, Bob’s Java Hut tea guru, has been steeped in the tea world from a very young age. When the opportunity presented itself to go into TeaSource headquarters for a Bob’s Java Hut Family Feature, there was no hesitation from Brandon to come along. TeaSource’s Wholesale Manager and our tour guide David greeted us and guided us over to our tea-tasting room. There, we were met with a tantalizing array of dry teas he had hand-picked for us to sample. As David educated us on each tea and answered every question we had, our conversations became lively enough for the owner of TeaSource, Bill Waddington, to join in. We learned quickly that tea was not just a means to make a living but first and foremost a passion that runs deep in all TeaSource employees. We loved to see the drive and inspiration everyone there has and knew we went with the right company for our tea needs. We found out that Bill frequents almost all of his tea growers all over the globe and has a major priority in knowing his farmers and where his tea is coming from. We all learned so much and had such a blast talking, tasting and experiencing tea. Brandon in particular has a few ideas up his sleeve for a rotating featured TeaSource Iced Tea here at Bob’s for the summer. Please feel free to check out TeaSource’s amazing website filled with not only information about the company, but also tips, products, and how to get in touch with the TeaSource team.
Thank you so much TeaSource!

Bob’s Java Hut Family Story : Regular Edition : Laura Weller

This week we had a fantastic interview with one of our beloved regulars, Laura Weller. Laura has been a regular at Bob’s Java Hut for the past five years and she is excited to participate in the Bob’s Java Hut Family Stories album on Facebook.
Thank you Laura so much for coming in to participate in a Bob’s Family Story Interview! Let’s start with what brought you into Bob’s Java Hut?

No problem! Thank you so much for having me. When Liz asked me to participate I was super excited to do the interview, I love Bob’s!
I first started coming here five years ago with Jendeen (another Bob’s regular) because we work together. On our first shift together she brought me into Bob’s for some coffee, and we’ve been meeting here ever since.

We absolutely adore Jendeen and are so happy that she brought you here. You mentioned that you work together, what is it that you do?
I do outreach work for the YMCA and their collaborative partner StreetWorks. It’s a program the YMCA runs to help educate and provide assistance to the homeless youth of Minnesota. We offer a variety of support, resources and shelter options for the homeless youth of MN. Jendeen and I started working together at one of the local food shelves for this program. We then ended up together doing public outreach with StreetWorks, asking homeless youth about town if they are in need of the program’s resources.

Wow, that’s amazing, what a great way to earn a living and give back to the community! Maybe we can set up a food drop-off here at Bob’s, that way our family can contribute to your already stellar program!
That would be amazing, and what a Bob’s thing to do.
Yes! And what do you mean, “a Bob’s thing to do”?

Bob’s is very much a family and community oriented coffee shop. There really is no other place like it. That’s what kept bringing me back. I can come into Bob’s knowing that if I want to bring my computer to do some paper work I can sit and focus or if I'm wanting someone to talk to that there will always be a friendly face that is excited to see me, whether it’s another regular or the barista on shift. Everyone’s always super active in conversation, if that’s what you are looking for.

For example, I came in here one day to meet with Jendeen, and there was Bill ( another Bob’s regular). He overheard that I was waiting for Jendeen and asked if I would like to play a game of cribbage with him. I was so caught off guard that he would be so kind, and we quickly became friends. Now whenever I'm able I come play cribbage with Bill and if I’m running late or just dropping in for a quick second he gives me a fist bump and it’s see you next week. That’s Bob’s, an unlimited support and family system.

Thank you so much Laura for sharing with us a little about you and why you love Bob’s. We love you too !
