I bought a thing
On my last spate of travel (to Palo Alto, Brussels, and Grenoble), no less than three people talked about their recent switch to a phone that I hadn't even heard of before two weeks ago. Sometimes it feels like I live in a cave. Which is silly - I used to l...

"For all our bleating about "science" we live in an astonishingly unscientific and anti-scientific society. We have plenty of anti-science people, but most of our "pro-science" people are really pro-magic and therefore anti-science. This bizarre misunderstanding of science yields the paradox that even as we expect the impossible from science , we also have a very anti-scientific mindset in many areas."

So, about two weeks ago the power cable for my #Samsung s9 laptop started to feel loose, and has progressively gotten worse. For the last few days, I've resorted to nearly-gymnastic balancing acts to keep it supplied with power. This morning, I finally had enough, and did some research... It seems, this is a very common problem which some people solve by buying a replacement faceplate for the laptop (~ $250). Much to my (pleasant) surprise, fixing it was really easy -- take off the faceplate, really the undercarriage,, then take out one screw, remove the plug dock, and bend one tiny metal spring back into place. That has so far fixed the problem!
