My wife and I were just discussing this in the context of both Halloween and the lack of responsibility expected from children in K12 education. As university educators, we fear the future impact as the phenomenon of overprotection trickles up to higher ed. Of course, we both see many bright, responsible 18-21 year olds who can withstand the rigors of college and life; however, we have each personally noticed a trend of increased anxiety.

Children need to be exposed to risky play. For ‘helicopter parents’, this might be difficult - but kids need to learn to manage danger themselves
