I laugh at these "good" reviews the one from 3 weeks ago must not have lived here more than 3 months... and here's why. 1) I moved in to the lakes last AUG, and there has been 2 shootings here within a week time span (btw it was all over the news) the 1st one was three black men who walked right up to an apartment (jumping the gate) shot the owner and ran off after a 20 min altercation at 3am. Two days later A police officer was shot in front of the apt complex on a routine traffic stop. After all this the office didn't say anything or even send out a notice of security, it was more of a "hush-hush" situation... There maintenance is awesome; yea they came to fix a broken garbage disposal in my apt and had to replace a pipe two months after I moved in, which was fine because they were old and I understood, you know sh!t happened but every time they would stop by and mess around with trying to fix it they would leave particle board all over my apt. covered all my electronics and couch and furniture so it was f**in awesome to clean every other day for 2 hours for a month straight because maintenance didn't give a cr@p to clean up and btw the base board is still not completely fixed, lol yea I'm moving. But living here I've now seen it all! Drug dealers down stairs, and right next door and some crazy lady who ran down a flight of stairs with a kitchen knife after her I guess now ex- boyfriend. Cops being called constantly, Some drunk black lady banging on my friends door at his apt in this complex at 2am (she was badly beaten and slurring) accused him and his roommate of beating her when they literally just opened the door, cops were called. obviously she went to jail. Had some drunk guy sleeping in my parking spot one night from the multiple bars across the street I guess. I could go on. So if you have anymore questions ask me because I will not sugar coat it like the office tries, they will show you a partially upgraded apt, promise they will upgrade yours "eventually" and when you ask about it you get no where but you do get a sick feeling that you got suckered; (it's a sickly sweet sensation lol). I'll be honest and I'm just happy I can look at other options for living now.

I've been here 8 years - I was the person that had the plant and several other things stolen from my patio in the next review! That didn't happen when I 1st moved in. It's been sort of up and down - it seems like now they are renting to just about anyone that has the money - not sure what the web site says - it has 2 pools, only the main complex has "lakes" phase 2 has sort of a nice rock garden - and phase 3 well they just tore down the play ground equipment - not sure if it's been replaced. If you want quiet don't live next to the pool - people let the gates slam, and of course there's lots of yelling all day long - if you aren't home during the day no biggy but if you are it gets old. Maintenance does pretty good at getting things fixed fast. It's not extremely quiet as far as traffic noise goes, despite what Peter says - it's right behind Del Norte high school, a lot of traffic on the street, and a lot of people pulling into the parking lot with music blaring - not sure the next place will be any better, but I can't handle the people on top of me anymore - they sound like elephants walking on top of me. I've lived in worse! and no the current management does not have dinners every month - that was the last manager who unfortunately doesn't work here anymore.

Seriously, don't live here. I've had my vehicle stolen twice and the management are very uncooperative. Oh, and unlike most apt complexes that add the utility cost of the common places (i.e. pool, office etc) to your rent, The Lakes will hit you with a hidden utility charge. So rent is actually around 80 dollars higher than they actually quote you, shady... And the hot tub is never hot.

I have had a good living experience at The Lakes. The office has always been friendly and helpful, and any trouble I've had with the apartment has been resolved quickly by maintenance, usually the next day.

I am pretty picky about where I live and so I visited about 10 other apartment complexes in Albuquerque's North Valley and North East Sections. I am also a real estate broker who sometimes manages other apartment complexes so I have some expertise on these matters. The location is central to the city so it is easy to get to anywhere quickly. It is close to shopping and restaurants. In spite of it being in the center of the city it is extremely quiet because it is on a sleepy back street. I almost never hear any traffic noise. The staff is cordial, helpful, and professional. Just one example: I needed to move a couch upstairs and didn't have any help. The management sent over a maintenance person to help me get it up into my apartment. Management lives on site so there are fewer problems than other places I have lived. They have a full-time maintenance, cleaning, and landscaping staff that responds within days to non-emergency fixes and minutes to more urgent matters. They all seem to be very diligent in doing their jobs. The units were clean and quiet. I took the floor plan with the high 12' ceilings that were on the top floor. I am a guy so the kitchen was adequate for me. The cabinets are functional and clean but old and nothing to brag about or look at. The windows were single-pain, which was a bit disappointing. But they were clean and, since the place was so quiet, not really a problem. There were no windows to my bathrooms though so I was a little worried that there would be a build up of mold or humidity. It was never a problem though. I fixed it by just leaving the bathroom doors open when I wasn't using them and it helped to humidify the rest of the apartment and dry out the bathroom at the same time. New Mexico air tends to be too dry for comfort anyway. I took an apartment with a balcony that had a nice view because it was only a little extra and occasionally enjoyed just being outside in my own space. I also liked having the covered parking option. The grounds were lush, clean, groomed, and well maintained. I used the hot tub and my daughter loved the pool. I used the gym more. Basketball, tennis, pool, ping pong, and racket ball facilities were available but I didn't use them. One thing that really sets apart The Lakes from any other place I have ever lived is that once per month the staff caters a dinner for the whole complex in their club-room. The food is good and it gives neighbors a chance to mingle and talk. It makes it feel more like a community. Safety is important to me and I liked several safety features of The Lakes. All adult tenants must undergo a criminal background check before they are allowed to move in. All apartment areas are gated. Though sometimes residents will prop a gate open if they are moving stuff, the gates are generally locked. Common areas are well lighted at night. The management has a zero tolerance policy that if any resident starts to get out of hand because of illegal activity they are quickly evicted. Management lives on site so they have their finger on the pulse of what is going on. Finally, they have a security guard patrol the area at night-not one of these services where they drive by the apartments two or three times per night-one officer assigned to just this complex to patrol it all night. They also have a 24 hour number to call the security company if you have any concerns. It is also in a pretty good part of town crime-wise. I never had a problem with crime here. I heard someone left a plant out on their front porch that was stolen so, like anywhere, it is not as if you can be completely careless. If you want newer cabinets and appliances and such, you will probably have to spend another $200 per month at a newer complex. For me, that wasn't worth the extra money. For me, there was no better combination of space, function, quality, beauty, safety, affordability, and serenity in Albuquerque than The Lakes Apartments. Peter
