while on the big Island for 8 days we ate 9 meals at Bongo Ben's. ......6 great breakfasts......a helluva way to start your day.......and a late lunch and 2 dinners. this place quickly became our go to place. the servers while busy were never overwhelmed and I never saw anyone unhappy at the other tables. the drinks great. the value damn good. the views???? are you kidding me? wow. the managers or owners always checking in to make sure all was smooth. I felt we could've eaten all meals here but we did have to explore the island go try them out, you will be happy, and full!😆

Great breakfast joint with great food, large portions, and the most reasonable prices we've seen. My wife and I had been going to Lava Java down the street for breakfast, but Bongo Bens not only had better food, but had much cheaper prices! Loved it!

Well, I ride a motorcycle, so I am used to defying death. Glad I didn't read about the sweaty servers, and avoid Bongo Bens. The food was tasty, reasonably priced, and great view of the bay, and street scenes. If you drink the $5 Mai Tais they sanitize your digestive track. They told me they had the Packer game on, and then when I got there the bartender said they couldn't get it, so that was annoying, but was cured by going to Humpy's Big Island Alehouse.

As a professional waiter in the business for 25 years, here is what I witnessed with my trained eye: The kitchen staff have a dirty white towel on their hip and wipe her sweaty faces and necks with it and then touch and handle the food and plates, wipe their hands on their pants, wipe their faces with their aprons and then handle both raw and cooked food, and wear no vinyl or rubber gloves when prepping and handling food orders. By all appearances, this seemed like normal everyday behavior in the kitchen area. The tables and chairs are way too close together and I thought more than one server was going to drop their trays or trip and fall trying to bob, weave and twist their bodies through. They had to turn their bodies sideways just to get through in some spots. A server's traffic flow should be smooth without obstacles. This is a Workman's Comp case waiting to happen. The view is okay, but is better in the upstairs restaurant above. The music from the live bands are way too loud and the music is sub-par.

Food was great (both standard fare French Toast/eggs/sausage and huevos rancheros) and the ocean view was lovely. This was the best price/meal we found of anywhere we went. Unfortunately, the service was abysmal. I don't know our waiter's name as he was never around long enough to ask.
