Beyond Phone Taps - Airborne Persistent Surveillance

Airborne persistent surveillance systems (PSS) can watch 25 square miles—for hours. Although we have no legal expectation of privacy in public places, existing laws were created at a time when it wasn't possible to record and store all activity. More importantly, it wasn't possible to then cross-reference human activity with financial, telecom, and geolocation data -- all in real time.

One of the chief reasons never to build a surveillance state is because once you build it, it becomes a massive jobs program. Dismantling it will be decried as harming the economy.

Left unaddressed, the panopticon will continue to expand, and because knowledge is power, the imbalance between those with access to the data and those without, will distort our democracy. In short: the playing field will not be level.

We need to establish rational limits to the unblinking eye because a people under constant surveillance are not free. They are self-censoring and fearful of judgment at some future date. Imagination and innovation require the freedom to fail, to err, and to express beliefs that are not in the mainstream. That's how positive change occurs. It is actually in society's best interests for citizens to have the ability to remain unwatched.
Persistent Surveillance Systems can watch 25 sq. miles—for hours.

This weeks episode of StarShipSofa really spoke to me. http://www.starshipsofa.com/2013/10/16/starshipsofa-no-309-will-mcintosh/ Will McIntosh's story “Possible Monsters” has resonating effects on my day and continuing today.

Documenting what a mean parent I am. Jack is turning out great, and is very adventurous. This is from when mom would not let him stand on the new milking stand for the goats because she was taking some pictures.

Wondering about the new Pacific Gateway Terminal in Bellingham, not looking forward to all the new coal trains. Heads up Skagit County.

I am not an environmentalist, but this does piss me off royally.  Why are coal cars not required to be covered.  I tried to capture the audio of the coal pelting my truck as we drove down the road this weekend.  There was some wind, nothing extrordinary, and there was a black cloud of coal blowing out of those rail cars as we traveled down the road near Peetz Colorado. #environment #railroad  #regulationfail   Truck drivers have to cover their load, why do rail roads not have to do so....

We came here with the family last summer and bought kites to fly on the beach. Fun gift shop and the espresso was excellent.
