I recently read her book "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings."  It was painful to read in that her childhood truly was painful. She found her voice in her prose. May she rest in peace.
Angelou refused to speak for much of her childhood and revealed the scars of her past in her groundbreaking memoir, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. She opened doors for black and female writers.

My daughter took a teddy bear to school the other day. A friend and I were trying to remember for my daughter how the bears were called "Teddy" bears. That story is central to the point in this talk about compassion and ecology.
In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt legendarily spared the life of a black bear -- and prompted a plush toy craze for so-called "teddy bears." Writer Jon Mooallem digs into this story and asks us to consider how the tales we tell about wild animals have real consequences for a species' chance of survival -- and the natural world at large.

Introduction
(Mostly) Self-taught Artist. I don't believe Art is ever going to make me personally rich and famous. However, I do find appreciation of Art and Culture to be central to my personal well-being. So I create it. Occasionally, I sell it. I also enjoy appreciating the Artistic contributions of others - in museums, Art shows, coffee houses, online - wherever I run into it, and it reaches me on some level, I tend to stop and think about it.

I find that people are most interesting when they talk about what drives them. I enjoy learning about what drives other Artists (and others) to do what they do, their creative process, their philosophy.
