A stroll around the garden late yesterday afternoon quickly told me how I would be spending much of my Saturday.  All those colorful leaves on the trees, along with gazillions of pine needles, have started to fall and have begun to smother the garden.  I rake the paths and clean all the leaves and pine needles off the plants but, to be honest, I don’t do much about raking the beds. I don’t see any point in it since it all needs to be done again in the spring.  Plus, during the winter, many of those leaves will provide a good mulch for the plants and begin to break down under the cover of snow to put nutrients back into the soil.
