This vineyard was divine. The staff were friendly, informative, open and inviting. The facilities are gorgeous! We saw people preparing for a wedding the next day and understand why it would be a hot spot for a wedding or other special event. We had the best wine tasting and tour! We couldn't resist buying a stock of wine to take home with us. I already miss the vineyard and look forward to returning to see the sunset on our next visit to Staunton and Fishersville, VA.

Beautiful tasting room, real wood fire blazing when we visited on a cold rainy November day. We paid $5 for the full tasting and it was well worth it, we truly liked all their varieties. Kelly was very friendly and knowledgable about the wine characteristics, growing practices, and particularly the history of the property. Our favorites were the Vidal Blanc and the Petite Verdot. All that plus getting to meet the resident dog Rascal equaled a most enjoyable visit, would love to return when nicer weather would let us take advantage of the attractive outdoor seating area and impressive scenery.

My (now) husband and I first visited Barren Ridge after a viticulture class outside Charlottesville. We have toured many wineries (VA, CA, WA, etc.) and were immediately impressed. The wines were fantastic, the tasting room was well appointed and cozy, the staff was knowledgeable and friendly. We ended up meeting the owners and hearing firsthand the lovely story of the Higgs' return to John's family property and its conversion from orchard to vineyard. We decided to hold our July 2013 wedding at Barren Ridge, and the owners and staff could not have been more helpful or accommodating. The Audrey Blackford Room (with its vaulted ceiling, stone fireplace and breathtaking views) was the perfect venue for our reception. We are grateful to the owners and staff for their contributions to our very special day. Their tending of the photogenic verdant vineyards; making great wines; maintaining such elegant and high quality facilities; opening them up for private rental, and working with us to plan and execute our wedding made our event ideal. We look forward to returning frequently to enjoy great wine in excellent company and beautiful surroundings.

We are by no means oenophiles and not being in the Dockers crowd we are generally more comfortable at one of the local breweries but Barren Ridge has never made us less than relaxed and comfortable. Service has always been warm and welcoming. I personally think their reds are some of the best in the area, especially the Meritage.

Despite the neighbor’s gunshots audible during our visit, the outdoor deck is pleasant enough for sipping and taking in the scenery. Maybe they were simply having an ‘off’ day or perhaps they were desirous of patrons of more evident (read: superficial) maturity but the staff certainly could have made more of an effort to make our party – who walked away with a trio of bottles – feel as welcome as the 50-somethings, Dockers-and-Tommy -Bahama-clad folks whose patronage they were obviously much more interested in garnering. To sum up: a small but pleasant enough venue and the reds (the Touriga, in particular) have character just about in-line with the sticker price… that is, of course, unless you’re the type to judge a book by its cover.
