The area I was
covering at this time consisted of lush farm land, rolling hill and corn
fields. My county has always had a very farm based community and so it’s not
strange to get calls about livestock and wildlife.  In the defense of the
people who call in...

My hands are shaking. Why? Because everyone’s inspiration comes to them in a different way, a friend a family member, a beloved pet, or an experience. For me it’s now, just now. In all honesty I have always thought I would write, but I’m not a good writer. Grammar is terrible, spelling even worse. Now if this was me and you were standing in my kitchen and I was telling you a story. I could make it great. Filled with seriousness, hand gestures, I may even get up a run around the room as I act out some parts. You would laugh I would laugh and it would work, just work. Because stories are so much more than words…. They are actions, that when put together, give you an image. You are there with me seeing it, feeling it and maybe even loving it as much as I did.
Interruption number one- look at todays to- do list- feeling guilty for writing, there must be something work related I’m supposed to be to doing. Check list, double check- all good!
Interruption number two- husband calls, must make him feel better about his job and give encouragement to keep going. It’s just another day- Kids fine, house secured, grocery list made, discuss bills and IRS issues, tell him about blog………reassure him that it will all be ok. Done, mental note husband is supper supportive, be nicer!
Back to inspiration – in 2005 when I first started working I met a pony named Prince. I know what you’re thinking. Oh my god she is going to write about puppies, kitten and butterflies and this blog is going to be all girly mushy and soft. Hang in there people, I promise the hard stuff is coming.  Back to the pony. He was injured at birth when his mother rolled on him breaking his leg.
Interruption number three- Co-workers call- asks questions about job. How to keep doing what we do- I fill him with hope- reassure him he does good work and explain how to make every day count or something like that. He is a good egg. Young, but will make a great officer. He tells me he spots large injured deer on side of road. Hangs up. Calls back, explains the deer is a huge buck, sounds super excited, then asks if it’s bad to cut off antlers of the animal- answer is YES, you will freak the public out……….. wait until dark- PS: don’t be all judgey- we use a lot of deceased animals to teach continuing education. Sounds creepy but you would be surprised. He Hangs up.            Co-worker calls back, buck is in velvet, horns are bloody he can’t handle cutting them off,………. at any time of day……….- I advise I’ll do it later……….in the dark.
Back to the pony- So the pony had to have the leg amputated. There is nothing so amazing then to see a pony that can live with three legs……….. and a whiffle ball bat. I shit you not people. A bat, like the one your toddler plays with. The bat was carefully lined with cotton and crafted fit over the stump of the leg. So what brought me to meet the pony? Well as an animal control officer I run a lot of “Check the Welfare” type calls. The one where a neighbor, is seeing something they can’t explain and so reports it to us to determine whether or not its cruelty. Sometimes these calls are legitimate and other times unfounded. In other words the situation will go something like this: The neighbor reporting is over reacting, crazy and hates the animal owner (because really his dog barks all night, which is not the complaint he is actually making) and therefore reports some crazy complaint to us, so that we will go over and make the animal owners life a little harder. OR the neighbor reporting is 100% right and the animals owner, who is nuts, is not providing the animals with proper care and now the animals are suffering. To recap someone is bat shit crazy, the reporting party or the animal owner. It’s up to me to determine the truth. Sometimes this job has nothing to do with animals, but being a mediator between two people can make all the difference.
Now that was a bit long winded and rambling which is why I’m worried about this blogging thing. No one is here to tell me when to stop writing and clarify, or holly mosses don’t write that.  Hopefully  you are still with me. I’m sure at this point you are totally confused and wondering who in your circle of friends directed you to this blog. Hang in there. The ending is good.
So anyway I meet the pony and it’s like one of those parts of the movie where he is running across the field and the sun is shining and the wind is catching his mane and yes his orange whiffle ball bat is perfect strapped on and the entire thing is completely magnificent. I leave the property saying to myself if this is how this job is going to go I can handle this.
It’s been 8 years. Last month I went back to the property where the pony lives.
I half expected the owners to not even live there, remember me or perhaps the pony had died. Let’s face it Prince has already astonished everyone who had known him exceeding everyone expectations of survival and the ability to thrive in his situation. I pulled up the drive way and there he was. Sporting a shiny new prosthetic limb! I literally gasped. He was alive, and looked fantastic and was still standing on all 3 I mean 4 feet. I spent a while talking to the owner, reminiscing, sharing stories that have lead me full circle back to her door. I walked into the field and prince followed me around, no dramatic running or beams of light shining down on me and him. But a quiet moment shared by two. For me a moment of inspiration.

Test, Test------- Step one, try.
Let me first say that this Blog is an experiment. My experiment. To see if I can share a small piece of my life with, well, the world. I imagine that i'm not the first to write these words. That as I sit at my real job, writing this, while I should be doing something, I wont say more important but work oriented. I know that this could be a disaster. I will forewarn all of you. My writing will be full of run on sentences, grammar errors and topics that you might not like to hear about. But what I hope I can give you is..... me. My perspective and a glimpse into what my life is like and how all the animals and people I have met, have lead me down a path, taught me how to listen and be a better person. Now that's not to say  that some of these encounters haven't left me scratching my head, and running like hell.... in a zig - zag formation.  Because not matter how helpful I want to be some people and animals just don't want to be helped, saved, rescued what ever you want to call it. Believe me people, this shit happens more often then not. So here we go. I'll write when I can. Which hopefully will be once a week. Ill post photos. I wont be able to put anything up that is an open investigation. But I have enough to say that I think and hope I can entertain you with my experiences.

Thank you,

V
