The Value Of Comments

+Mathew Ingram and +Scott Smith discuss the value of keeping the comments on the virtual news page or delegating them to social media.

Personally I usually advocate a hybrid is all, but the most simple cases.

My Botnet Purchased Millions of Dollars in Cars and Defeated the Russian Hackers

A friend of mine inspired me to watch old +DEF CON talks, and altoigh I though this talk was great I would probably not have shared it, if not for the fact that +mike schrenk mentioned a great browser addon that he might use to do the same today:

Two Pizza Myth

Both Werner Vogels and Jeff Bezos claim that a team size of 8 is ideal and they call it a two pizza team because you can feed the whole team with two pizzas.

Unlike Vogels and Bezos I actually looked at the size of the largest commonly available pizza and compared it to an average meal size. After some Googling I discovered that the one of the largest pizza sizes which is sold in most outlets is 16", there are indeed some 24" pizza's, but these are not commonly available. Then I looked at the most common single serving pizza size, which is 13" for the sake of argument we'll assume that this is adequate to feed one adult. The difference in surface area is about 33%, 16" is a third larger than 13". One 16" pizza would serve 1.33 people, so a two 16" pizza team could only ever be a maximum of 3.

I also did the calculation for the 24" pizza, this is about 3.4 as big as a 13" pizza, meaning that two 24" pizza's would serve 6.8 people, so about 7 which would come close to the 8 which Vogels and Bezos call ideal.

However they are saying 8. So how are they feeding this extra person? Do they sneak in bread? A salad? Or does everybody go a little hungry? I'm guessing the latter.

Oplerno is APPROVED!

WE ARE APPROVED!

Starting today Oplerno has been approved to operate by the Vermont State Board of Education for the next three years. This means we can start recruiting students and that they will earn credit for the classes they take! It also allows our students to transfer these credits to other colleges and universities if the institution chooses to accept them.

Now the fun really begins! Over the next several days, we will be working hard to get the word out though press releases, social media, and even old-fashioned telephone calls. Oplerno is no longer just a group of around 100 faculty, 3 founders and 4 Board Members. It is a movement with which we have all been entrusted to help grow and nurture so that people all over the world can access affordable, high-quality higher education that rewards great teaching with good pay.

A Storm in Brewing in Paradise #highered   #education

Almost exactly 1 year ago +Dougald Hine, who you might know from his TEDxLondon talk, delves deeper into the Storm of change which is brewing and will blowing in education.

Hine says many of the things that I too agree with and I would consider very important to +Oplerno.

The storm is upon us. Some people recognize that the new world we live in needs a new way to deliver and organize education. Dougald recognizes this.

Common Core Math

Somebody posted this problem on FB and said that the common core math was more difficult that the original. Being an idiot I decided to have a look at the difference with number lengths that actually matter.

EDIT: secretly it's Vedic mathematics...

After spilling beer on my laptop Mac Assist told me I would probably need to have my keyboard replaced. He advised me to use the services of a competitor, as they would probably have the parts in stock and he would need to order them, which would mean it would take longer. Not many companies are this honest, and put customer service ahead of earning money. Great service!
