Was very lucky again today to get a spot at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Center for the Shuttle DIscovery Transfer Ceremony. Got to see the Shuttle Enterprise and Shuttle Discovery nose-to-nose, up close, and hear speeches from the head of NASA, the Smithsonian, and Sen. John Glenn, among others! A very cool experience all-around, and certainly once-in-a-lifetime. Note the difference in color between the Enterprise (never traveled to space) and the Discovery (365 days in space, 180 million miles+ travelled!). The charring is from the last re-entry. Very amazing.

Enjoyed an amazingly beautiful day downtown today hanging out with my son taking in the cherry blossoms. This is my favorite time of year here in DC and taking pictures of the beautiful cherry blossoms never gets old! New this year are shots of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial during its first open spring season. Good times.

Just updated my blog with some images of my resident Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperii) having some supper in my yard the other day. Enjoy (nothing too gory - just a cool bird with some attitude!) http://drewsmithphotoblog.com/?p=781

Was lucky enough to spend the morning exploring Capitol Hill with my son today - and what an amazing spring day it is. It's already 80 degrees and everything is suddenly blooming - my favorite time of year here for sure. Updated my blog with some images - enjoy!

More signs of an early spring - enjoyed the 70 degree weather on a hike with my son today on the Bull Run - Occoquan Trail and snapped a quick shot of some early Virginia Bluebells beginning to bloom - about a month early!

Last week I heard through the grapevine about a Great Horned Owl nest in Chantilly and I made my way over on Saturday morning. Turns out to have been good timing - the chick was no longer on the nest by Monday morning. I did see him stretching his wings and climbing around a bit, so here's hoping the little guy is off on some new adventures!

Got to experience a very special event today with the flyover of the Space Shuttle Discovery aboard a modified 747 as it flew on its final flight from Cape Canaveral to Dulles Airport. It made 4 passes over various parts of the city at low altitude and gave some great views of a very rare event! The only thing that could have made this better was if it were at 5pm for nice low angle light, but what a cool thing to see! Enjoy!

Here are some new photoimpressions of the cherry blossoms along the Tidal Basin. As I've posted before, I have a lot of fun making these images. The basic technique is to use long exposures (as long as I can get) and usually hand-hold the camera, moving it in different ways as the picture is being taken. I used a single exposure on all of these images. In processing the images I use contrast and curve adjustments and some saturation, but the real key to the images is making the movements work to highlight the various textures and colors in the scene. What do you think - do they work? Any and all thoughts/comments appreciated!

Had a lot of fun in the studio last night at CDIA. Photographed some African statues that normally sit on my living room mantle and which I have always liked. I loved the feel of this one. Hope you do too!

I've updated my blog with an exciting post (if you're into birds) about a partially leucistic Red-Shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) I saw yesterday. Leucism is a reduced pigmentation condition similar to albinisim and is somewhat common in Red-Tailed Hawks, but quite rare in other kinds of Buteo hawks. Very cool indeed.
