BIG NEWS! After nearly 18 years as a journalist at the Contra Costa Times, I am leaving the news business. It is very difficult to put into words how it feels to make such a huge career change in one's early 50s. But when I saw Rep. George Miller announce his retirement from Congress after almost 40 years and speak about his plans for the future, it inspired me to imagine a life beyond journalism. My decision was based on many reasons but in truth, I received an offer too good to turn down.

Starting March 3, I will take a post as executive director of governmental affairs for the eastern division of the Building Industry Association of the Bay Area. My office will be in Walnut Creek and I will advocate on behalf of builders with local governments and elected officials in Contra Costa, Alameda and Solano counties on housing issues. I have covered housing, development, transportation and related issues for much of my newspaper career and I am excited to become more of a participant in the process after working so many years as an observer.

I am so grateful to everyone who helped me throughout my journalism career from my editors to my fabulous colleagues and especially those who granted me interviews both on and off the record.  It was a grand and glorious ride, and I will miss it!
