Book Hoarding
I’ve been busily watching videos
from the IndieReCon2015. It was run by ALLI and there was so much information
that it will take me a while to absorb it all. One person in a Q&A asked the
head of Bookbub about e-book hoarding. And I confess to being kind of...

I like CJ's horse shoe metaphor...
crowdfunding can be tricky. Who was it who got slapped recently; she had two books published and the publisher didn't fund the third so she went to kickstarter and got HUGE criticism for daring to say she would use the money to pay her rent. How do people think she is going to write without a roof over her head? In the end, she cancelled it all. No third book.
Yeah! - more characters of colour and different sexuality.
Oooh china as a book market... or India. Big english market there.
Bookbub shoves things to the top of the bestseller lists.
Amazon will always do what is best for IT.
I am guilty of hoarding free books... but even so, it goes on my Goodreads 'to-read' list and that matters to their algorithms
oooh self-e looks cool...
I reckon the publishers can't pick the market any more and this is why they are picking up proven indies if they can like Jasinda Wilder. They are sure bets for them. Great point about independent editors. I even saw a discussion on GR recently where an author wanted to add their editor in to the book page.
Shirtless men kissing literary women??? I am SOOO there... *runs off to scribble ideas out*
Piers has got a 'read an excerpt' option on his GR page. HOW did he do that???
reenactors know everything about a certain historical era - they'd be the right people to ask.
I LOVE the indie philosophy of helping each other. I've learned SO much just watching all these videos and reading the articles.
Thank you SO much +Orna Ross at Alliance of Independent Authors

Thanks Anne-maree. I don't think that was CJ -- she's written something like 29 books. I'm doing my own crowdfunder, actually, trying to make a very special book, with special cover, paper in the style of an 1897 first edition by the poet #WBYeats. Check it out here: http://ornaross.com/secretrose. I'm so glad you enjoyed the day and learned a lot -- we'll be posting the recorded videos soon, so you can see them as often as you like/need.

Interesting... maybe the drop down menu for bad writing will get rid of some of the chaff. But the one for mood intrigues me. Will they have a listing of upbeat stories?
I saw on Reddit today that Amazon is testing some new tags on their review system. In addition to the classic 5-star rating, you can now fill out a few extra drop-down categories when you review se...

Editors... yes, we have to trust them with our wordy babies... And I get what Ricardo is saying about being frightened to pay out for that first book. It's a lot of money when you haven't sold anything BUT it's hard to have that faith in your own work when it's untried.

Excellent info, thanks Jane.
Wattpad... gah... I swear it will be their wordpress or livejournal. Read it in ten years and cringe. I follow a heap of people who write in endless blocks of text with no punctuation, no speech marks or anything. It is unreadable. But they are writing ... so shrugs
put down the red pen AM and back away
I've seen a couple of places that try to help as Jane suggested. Reedsy are trying to set up a group for authors where they take care of your mailing list for you... but... then it isn't yours. You know?

I know what you mean about not seeing the formatting. I recently started using the kindle app to read on my pc and I loaded up some classic books from Project Gutenberg and ewww… they look awful.
I used to read them in adobe and had no problem because I expected them to look text-like; it was my expectation with kindle that was different.
I heard of someone whose book was yanked from Amazon because it had ‘too many dashes’ and he had no more than are supposed to be used in connected words. They said it affected readability.
I love fonts. It is so tempting to use a ‘cute’ font that just makes a work unreadable.

Congrats on the guardian writer thing Roz, that's awesome.
Titles??? gah... one of my early stories is literally titled the first five words of the story because that was how Word autosaved it and I could not think of anything better!
I'll be adding Roz's new tome to my wishlist as I loved her earlier works.

+Anne-Maree Gray Thanks, Anne-Maree! That's a good way to get a title - maybe the obvious is the best!

Good info, thanks guys.
I think 'real fans' are the key, and giving them a copy of your book early is sure to earn their thanks, or reviews, and they are the people that give you the word of mouth reviews that really push sales.

How many copies of "The guide to Twilight' did Stephenie Meyer sell? Fans who missed the series bought it. There's a tie-in option as well.
Thanks, Joy. I hadn't heard of bublish but I will check it out.

That is fantastic news about the print runs! I think a lot of indie writers hold to the ‘one day I’ll see my book on a shelf in a store’ dream. I know I do. You ladies are formidable!
Thank you so much for sharing information and strategies. You blaze a trail and you don’t shut it down behind you. That’s awesome. kowtows we’re not worthy…

Kid extra
I have to type quietly. I have acquired
an extra kid. I know right, at my age? Who would have thought it? I had this
pipe dream that as my children got older they would move out, but clearly it is
not to be. But it does squish my muse quite a lot. Hard to w...
