Skip buying your first home, which is clearly impossible, and move directly into buying the second or third. 2. Attend every open home in your preferred area. Once you have found one you really like in somebody else's price range, sit down at the kitchen table and refuse to leave.

This week the world celebrates World Disclosure Day, a focal point for people and organizations to come together to assert their right to know and demand cosmic truths being withheld from them by their governments regarding an extraterrestrial presence engaging the human race.

It may not be the best reason to fund the arts. It's certainly not the only one. But travelling to the small city of Rovereto, at the feet of the Italian dolomites, reminded me of the lasting influence that a single great artist can have for a community. To complicate the story a little, ...

There is a famous passage in Paul Bowles' Sheltering Sky about how life appears to us as an inexhaustible well of experiences, whereas in fact everything happens a fixed – and diminishing – number of times. It's the realisation that made me ask myself, upon leaving Venice a few days ago, ...

There is a meme routinely shared on social media of passengers aboard a train, each absorbed in their own personal information and entertainment device. The caption reads 'All this technology is making us antisocial'. The joke is that it is a very old photograph; what the passengers are holding ...

Some years ago, while researching an essay on the Eurozone crisis for Overland, I listened to the recording of a symposium held at the London School of Economics. When it came to discussing whether or not the technocrats who designed the common currency had known that the system wouldn't work, ...

The government has finally reviewed our refugee quota, underwhelming us all by making permanent – as of 2018 – the modest increase of 250 people a year currently taken up by the emergency intake of Syrian nationals. This is well short of the doubling of the quota demanded by campaigners and ...

A few days ago somebody asked on Twitter: 'Imagine there is no medicine or intervention. How would you have died and at what age?' The answers were many and varied. I was interested that so many people – including the asker – seemed so sure. Me, I could have died right away as I developed ...

The statue was recovered in 1508 during the excavation of an ancient villa in Rome and they say that Michelangelo watched as it was unearthed. It had been described by the historian Pliny, who attributed the Greek original to the sculptors Polydorus, Agesander and Athenodoros.

One of precious few Italian films to deal with the pre-war Fascist period, and most especially with the acme of Mussolini's popularity, Ettore Scola's Una giornata particolare (A Special Day) takes place entirely within the confines of a tenement complex known as Palazzo Federici in Rome.
