Photographed this second instar caterpillar getting ready to shed its skin. You can see how stubby his antennae/tentacles look and how plump he has gotten. The old head case is very small compared to the new head forming beneath. You can also see the spiracles along the side. These are where the caterpillar takes in oxygen.

I took this shot very late at night. I used a small, but bright LED flashlight as my light source. Worked fairly well.
