The 3-acre landscape around George Jones and Dean Del Giudice’s home is laid out as a glorious journey through garden after garden, all designed and immaculately maintained by the talented couple. The resulting spread of interconnected outdoor rooms the couple named Plantsville Pines could easily rival a botanical garden. http://ow.ly/KAQq30lDCI0

Tree removal can help homeowners protect their house against possible damage from falling limbs, and saves the time and money associated with raking leaves. But often, the area where a tree stump was located remains a void in the middle of an otherwise healthy lawn, filled with wood chips and sawdust. http://ow.ly/pxTB30lDCr3

Chrysanthemums are some of our favorite flowers. They’re the MVPs of the autumn garden. They’re center stage in any fall decoration or front porch display. They have cheery blooms in autumnal hues, and many can stand up to Southern winters and grazing deer http://ow.ly/uDlp30lDBZf

Hostas are typically pest- and disease-free and easy to grow. Deer will tend to eat them. Gardeners have historically been able to buy and trade hostas without concern for introducing any problems to their gardens.
There is a virus called Hosta Virus X that is becoming more common on hostas and is popping up here and there at the Chicago Botanic Garden. http://ow.ly/QE1630lDCy7

The term “rain garden” is a bit of a misnomer. Sounding like it is some kind of a water-logged bog, a rain garden, in fact, is a slightly sunken garden designed to capture storm-water runoff. Rain gardens can alleviate erosion on your property while trapping fertilizers, pesticides, and organic pollutants, like grass clippings, before they wash down storm drains; from there, they can enter creeks and streams and cause algal blooms, reducing available oxygen for fish and other animals. Rain gardens to the rescue!

As humans put more and more heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere, the Earth warms. And the warming is causing changes that might surprise us. Not only is the warming causing long-term trends in heat, sea level rise, ice loss, etc.; it’s also making our weather more variable. It’s making otherwise natural cycles of weather more powerful. http://ow.ly/1LLf30lBtU6
