Artificial bone grafting materials are supposed to be osteoconductive--which is assumed to mean the material is biocompatible, and acts as a matrix which is infiltrated by bone-forming cells and therefore supports the creation of natural bone.
A new study seems to indicate these materials (hydroxyapatite crystals) are not so conductive--and not so osteo either:
