a canary in the mine shaft? what's interesting is how quiet this debate has been among republicans. lots of old fashioned persuasion going on among members. republicans have a keen sense that they have been rolled by democrats for decades...going back to those 42 years that Democrats controlled the House. call it tribal memory. the pledge has given them a fixed point to defend and credibility with campaign supporters who want change in Washington on debt and deficits. the decision to give that up is not an easy one.

this is an interesting short story...lots of surprises, once you start working it out. "control" of Congress may not be all it's cracked up to be....

President Obama's curious performance in the debate recalls a book by longtime LBJ aide, George Reedy, "Twilight of the Presidency," that boils down to: the cumulative effect of hearing "hail to the chief" every time you walk into a room is not good.  you're surprised when someone takes you on face to face. even annoyed. slow to respond. and it shows. it's not just that the job is tough, it's that all that flattery is corrosive. interesting observation from one of the best men in public life.

whatever the outcome of tonight's vote, let's hope it's not a tie. if ever a US election that needed to look, feel, and be legitimate, it's this one. and a tie wouldn't help.

it's always a shocker to report outside DC. people have other things on their minds. they're busy. they're blitzed by political noise and shut it off. tv's have remotes that click. so much of what passes as political reporting has become rehashing the echo chamber, from a remote location. so, to a reporter who still bothers to get in his car and drive somewhere, i say: bravo!

transparency is supposed to take care of any negative fallout from this experiment in unlimited, unaccountable campaign spending by corporations, unions, and individuals. how's that working for us?

it helps if the house is sited in an interesting place. san francisco makes the cut. other issue: ...compared to what? i saw workers in the bay area renting parts of garages with hose privileges to avoid hours of commute.
