women can make a change!

Awesome woman for International Women's Day: Cynisca of Sparta.

Greece was scandalized in 396 BC when a Spartan princess named Cynisca (which translates as girl puppy, or "little bitch," if you will) entered the prestigious four-horse chariot race in the Olympics. And won. (She entered and won at the 392 BC games, too.)

Women weren't allowed even to watch the Olympics and, although she did not drive the horses, she did own, breed and train them.

Adding to the shocking audacity of all this, Cynisca had a statue of herself driving her horses erected in the Temple of Zeus at Olympia with a bold, first-person inscription:

Kings of Sparta are my father and brothers. I, Cynisca, victorious with a chariot of swift-footed horses, have erected this statue. I declare myself the only woman in the whole of Greece to have won this crown.
