Modern is one of the best pastry shops I've been to. As compared to Mike's down the block, Modern is much less hectic, laid back, smaller, and frankly just nicer. The line snaked to the door but the line moved quickly. I came here during Christmas and the counter staff couldn't have been nicer, even though I only got a small order. The biscotti I got from here was great and my mom enjoyed it immensely. I also got the ricotta pie for myself. This is their Italian cheesecake and it is superb. Not too sweet, very well done, delicious crust...if you ever try an Italian cheesecake this is the way it should be. I devoured the slice I got like I was going to the electric chair. I could eat this everyday, and it makes me sad that great Italian cheesecake is hard to come by nowadays. Cash only.

I'd heard that the cannoli's were better than Mikes, so lets see what the talk was about. What I will say is this - they are filled when you order them (which Mike's doesn't always do, I'm sure to save time with the long lines) and their shells stay crunchy longer, which is a big plus in my book and the filling was smooth and quite tasty. Overall, they were excellent. However, they lack in their pastries ... I ordered the key lime pie and the filling was only ok (not limey enough in my book) and the crust was not good at all - tasted to "oily" (almost like lard) and hard, not flaky at all. It's hard to find a good keylime pie and I've yet to find one.

There was a line out the door and they only take cash. Having said that the pastries were very good. Though the place was very, very tiny, and they don't inform you of the cash only policy, until you're inside, which can be a pain after you've waited in line for 20 minutes.

Forget about Mike's. In the Mike's and Modern feud, Modern will always win and the reason is simple. Modern fills their cannoli to order while Mike's has them pre-filled. Both are certainly very good but I will always prefer Modern for this reason.

I absolutely prefer Modern Pastry over Mikes Pastry. Their cannolis are filled fresh in front of you and the shell is always crunchy. The lines are usually long, but do not let that discourage you, they tend to go quickly. They are reasonably priced and I have never had a bad pastry here.

Ask anyone in Boston for the best cannoli and the answer will be either Mike's or Modern Pastry! For me personally, Modern is the winner. The shell at Modern is superior and keeps the crunchy texture longer. They're also filled to order which Mike's sometimes does not do anymore. Get them dipped in chocolate! Now, if only they make their ricotta even better..

Cash only establishment. My favorite is the cannoli because they pipe the filing in when you order it unlike mikes which pre-pipes them. Line moves along quick

After trying Mike's Pastry's cannoli, I knew that I would eventually have to try their well known competition, Modern Pastry. So, how did it go? Well, I really hate to say it, but I prefer Modern Pasty over Mike's. Why? Well, at Mike's I decided to try something a little different and opted for a peanut butter flavored ricotta filled cannoli. It tasted very good. At modern, I went traditional, and split a chocolate dipped cannoli shell filled with a classic ricotta filling. It tasted amazing. I can't really pin point why one is superior to the other but I think it has to do with the ricotta itself. True, the peanut butter flavor the ricotta might have masked some of the flavor, but it sort of seemed to have lost the taste of the ricotta all together. At modern, I could taste the ricotta all the way through and loved every bite. Also, the shell had a nice crunch which I preferred to Mike's softer shell. In the end, I think it comes down to taste preferences when deciding on which cannoli place to visit. If you like a stronger ricotta flavor, pick Modern. If you want to try some different flavor combinations, go for Mike's.
