Working Homes/Working Families, with Humble Design and the Home Depot, gave away their 3rd home in the Morningside neighborhood during the #SAYDetroit #radithon on Thursday, December 8, 2016. Leo Cooke, a U.S. Army Veteran and his two daughters will be moving into their new home this week. After returning to civilian life, he was a carpenter and did other jobs - he had a stint as a flight attendant - before falling on hard times. He is currently transitioning through Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries' veteran’s housing. Your contributions to SAY Detroit help families like the Cooke's with a hand up. #SAYDetroit #radiothon

Home giveaway #2 during the #SAYDetroit #radiothon, in the Morningside neighborhood. Mia Branch will be moving in with her 9 children. Mia and her family became homeless after a fire destroyed her home in March 2015. She lost everything but her family. She currently lives with her kids in the home of a church member. As of today, Mia will move into her new house on Dec. 21 (fingers crossed!), right before the holiday!

Still very moved by the handwritten notes Unika, India, and Daejanique gave me during the #SAYDetroit #radiothon. They are mentors in the Westside Cultural & Athletic Club, founded by Erica Wright in 1976 out of her house as a way to fill the void for inner-city children whose parents are involved in drugs and other negative behaviors. Without #SAYDetroit’s funding, her program doesn’t live as big.

As is tradition during the #SAYDetroit #radiothon, the Working Homes/Working Families presents 3 home giveaways. #WorkingHomesWorkingFamilies program pairs refurbished homes with working families who need decent housing and can maintain the home. Our first home giveaway is for Lillie, 20, and her 3 girls, who hope to be moved in before Christmas. The Taylors are currently being housed by The Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries. Lillie has had a tough life. Her mother was murdered when she was 1, and her grandmother died a couple of weeks later. She was in the foster care system for a while and eventually became homeless, sleeping in a car. This hand-up is a new start for her
