A great lesson I just learned from Shawn Coyne over at Steven Pressfield's blog: make your villain evil enough and your hero rises to the occasion. We write better heroes when we write better villains.

I like realistic fiction with a villain who could be the guy or gal next door; someone who looks perfectly harmless but has an agenda that almost makes sense, one we empathize with because they're good people who got aimed the wrong direction by misplaced loyalties or life's frustrations.
