I bought Batman #13 at this place yesterday since its next to my girl friend's work and sometimes I pop in. They've always been alright. Its a quiet little shop, which is kind of nice. Now I see why. I buy Batman #13, ask for a bag and a board, fairly standard situation. Guy puts them both in the bag... only he didn't put the comic IN the bag in board. Batman #13 happens to have a hard cardboard cutaway section, since it wasn't placed IN the bag and board, the normal thin paper was pushed around by the hard cardboard section. So now my copy of the sold out Batman #13 is basically downgraded to crap condition before I even get it home. I bought TWO comics with bags and boards. Would it have been SO MUCH TROUBLE to put them IN THE BAGS AND BOARDS? Obviously in asking for them I've told you I'm a consumer that cares enough about the condition to at least buy bags and boards, you could have put them inside. I only bought two comics. The store was empty. I worked at a very busy shop in LA for 3 and a half years, I always put people's comics into the bag and board if they didn't have a giant stack and the store didn't have a major line. Every other shop I've been to in LA and NY have put the comics in them if I wasn't buying a huge stack. This is amateur hour 101. And even though its totally convenient for me to pop into this store, I'm never going to give them a cent again. I seriously can't even believe this happened at any shop that CALLS itself a comic shop. EDIT: Shortly after publishing this review, I emailed the review to the owner to give them a heads up that clearly they need some improvement. My phone number happens to be on my email signature. I get a very insulting call from the owner talking to me as if I am a child in a principles office about how "I put a bomb on a band aid" and that warning people of this situation was very "immature" and that he would only replace the book if I "took them down". I stated sternly that this was a completely amateur move that they've done before and the owner informs me he's been in business for 27 years and that I shouldn't talk down to him.... says the guy calling me and scolding me for posting a negative review he clearly wishes I hadn't posted. I also stated that of all issues, a heavily publicized issue like Batman #13, you'd think the clerk would at least ask, 'hey, you want I should put this in the bag n board for you?" He says, not everyone knows its a special issue. So the staff of a comic shop doesn't know what the most hyped issues of the week are? Its a wonder they've been in business for 27 years. So that's the sort of place this is apparently. Places like this make the transition to digital purchases SO much easier. I understand not wanting a negative review to stick, but throughout the entire conversation, he never once apologized for what happened. At least there's still Midtown comics, still the best shop in NYC.
