A nod to the late PHB - a Vicki Award from Woodhull Sexual Freedom Alliance
What a wonderful surprise! Nine years of online activism and one award that I never expected to receive is a sexual freedom award. Does the content my former labor of love,  Pam's House Blend 's rate that honor? The good people at the Woodhull Sexual Freedo...

LEON STAFFORD: “Every leader goes through different phases of maturity, growth and development and it helps by (recognizing) the mistakes that you make,” Cathy said. “And you learn from those mistakes. If not, you’re just a fool. I’m thankful that I lived through it and I learned a lot from it.

...The company tried to extricate itself from the controversy by repeatedly asserting it does not discriminate against customers or employees on the basis of sexual orientation.

“Probably the elements that were stressful for me most is from our internal staff and from operators and how this may be affecting them,” he said. “The bottom line is we have a responsibility here to keep the whole of the organization in mind and it has to take precedence over the personal expression and opinion on social issues.”

...Asked his thoughts on legislation proposed in several states, including Georgia, that would allow people of faith to refuse service to some customers because of their religious beliefs — laws that opponents say are designed to allow discrimination against gays — Cathy demurred.

“I think that’s a political debate that’s going to rage on,” he said. “And the wiser thing for us to do is to stay focused on customer service.”

Another lost weekend...
This weekend has been quite pitiful. Between the shingles (in parts where you'd never want them), my weekly RA biologics making me feverish, sick & sore,  and the side effects from the 3x a day anti-virals for those shingles, I spent most of the weekend in ...

Phil Rogers and Katy Smyser: "NBC5 Investigates examined all of the Leadership PAC's of the Illinois Congressional delegation. Only one congressman, Democrat Mike Quigley, was willing to provide documentation for how his PAC money was spent. Some others didn't reply at all. Others gave terse statements declaring that they complied with the letter of the law.
Documents

"These are not supposed to be slush funds so that lobbyists and others seeking influence can contribute in order to help support a member's lifestyle," Sloan said. "I think they'd be in a hurry to tell you if the purposes were all innocent and legitimate."

Take Peoria Republican Aaron Schock's Generation-Y PAC, for example. According to documents filed with the Federal Election Commission, the fund started 2012 with $50,004.18 cash on hand. Over the next 24 months, the PAC had total receipts of $550,633.00. About half of that came from other PACs. But of the over $600,000.00 available to spend, less than half of GEN-Y's disbursements went to candidates and committees. More than $250,000.00 went to expenses apparently involved in running the PAC itself.

That included over $56,000.00 spent at hotels. During the 24-month period examined by NBC5 Investigates, the Schock PAC listed three stays at the legendary Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles, totaling $9,462.27. There were three nights at L.A.'s luxurious Mondrian, and other stays at the Luxe and Beverly Wilshire. Gen-Y dropped another $12,285.00 at the Wynn in Las Vegas. In Chicago, the PAC listed 14 stays totaling over $11,000.00 at the Peninsula, and another four stopovers at the Trump.

The Generation-Y PAC dropped over $26,000.00 on private aircraft. Fine restaurants across the country added another $36,909.00. They shelled out $11,604.00 at a Colorado ski resort, with hundreds more for snowmobile rentals - all during a 24-month period.
Who enjoyed the largesse? Schock's staffers won't say.

"Gen-Y conducts its activities with all applicable rules and regulations," campaign spokesman Karen McDonald told NBC5 Investigates in a statement. "All activity is properly disclosed, and the committee is in full compliance with federal campaign finance laws."

"This is all we're offering on the record," she said."

My eyes, my eyes! Travails of progressive bifocals, the eye doc...and cataracts?!
Saw eye doc yesterday. Terribly necessary because I cannot see anything in focus in any field of my progressive bifocals at this point; things are fuzzy, and for close up (like reading a pill bottle), I just take my glasses off or lift them up. It's incredi...

Gentle hugs, Pam. My RA left me alone in Mexico, then knocked me flat when I came back to Ohio. I hate how much weather can trigger it.

IAN HANEY LÓPEZ: "By calling out his use of “code words,” [Rep. Barbara] Lee put Ryan in the company of past politicians who have blown the proverbial dog whistle—using surreptitious references to race to garner support from anxious voters. Examples of dog whistling include Barry Goldwater’s endorsement of “states’ rights”; Richard Nixon’s opposition to “forced busing”; Ronald Reagan’s blasts against “welfare queens”; and George H.W. Bush’s infamous Willie Horton ad.
These instances of racial pandering typically have been treated as disconnected eruptions, when in fact the GOP has made a concerted effort to win support through racial appeals. This pattern is so entrenched—and so well known—that two different chairs of the Republican National Committee have acknowledged and apologized for this strategy.
“By the seventies and into the eighties and nineties,” RNC chair Ken Mehlman said in a 2005 speech before the NAACP, “Republicans gave up on winning the African American vote, looking the other way or trying to benefit politically from racial polarization. I am here today as the Republican chairman to tell you we were wrong.” Five years later, his successor Michael Steele similarly acknowledged that “for the last 40-plus years we had a ‘Southern Strategy’ that alienated many minority voters by focusing on the white male vote in the South."

...Nor did Ryan help himself by invoking the conservative scholar Charles Murray—a man who co-wrote a controversial 1994 book, The Bell Curve, tying intelligence to race, and who in 2000 explained that genetics will likely show, “One reason that we still have poverty in the United States is that a lot of poor people are born lazy.”

But what of Ryan’s insistence he did not consider race whatsoever, or his later explanation that he had been “inarticulate” in his comments? Perhaps Ryan genuinely did not recognize the racial narrative embedded in his remarks about an inner city culture that devalues work. But at best, this suggests that Ryan has uncritically adopted the charged rhetoric of his party without understanding its racial undertones.

Less charitably, in weighing Ryan’s protestations of innocence, we should be clear that denying racial intent is par for the course in dog whistling. The whole point of speaking in coded terms is to transmit racial messages that can be defended as not about race at all. Today’s broadly shared anti-racist ethos condemns naked appeals to racial solidarity; those politicians who nevertheless seek to trade on racial provocations must do so in ways that maintain plausible deniability."

This is something I've observed for awhile. Sometimes called 'casual' racism, the idea of racist notions being so entrenched they aren't even recognised as being racist by the ones who espouse them. There is some notion that to be racist, you need to be conscious of your racism. As if not realising you are racist removes culpability.

I believe Ryan, and countless others don't see themselves as racist, and truly believe they are being insightful and progressive when they make these statements.

Of course, much like the law, ignorance does not give you a pass. They should check their privilege.

I'm writing this at a diner on my iPhone, so forgive me if this reply is disjointed and semi-incoherent.

G-d dammit. I need another health hurdle like a hole in the head, but here we are. I've had an outbreak of shingles . Shingles is a painful skin rash. It is caused by the varicella zoster virus. Shingles usually appears in a band, a strip, or a small area o...

Certainly feel for you, and wishing for a speedy recovery. Had a first ever outbreak on the left side of my face in 2005.  Here's hoping the stress, and triggers abate.

I had to write about this -- it's an outrage and affects a lot of people who have prescription insurance handled by this company. I received a copy of the "contract" ExpressScripts/Accredo has sent out for customers/patients to sign and it is a horror of invasion of privacy and intrusion in the doctor-patient relationship that is outlandish. From my post:

Express Scripts (@ExpressScripts/@ExpressRxHelp)/Accredo (formerly Medco) recently sent out to its customers a packet of documents, a "contract" as it were, for patients to in essence sign a lot of their privacy and medical rights away to this corporate behemoth.

It is a controversial document because of its intrusion into the doctor/patient relationship, its request for a patient's advance directive, and request to authorize the company to "seek emergency treatment as is deemed necessary" for the patient, even though it is not the patient's medical health provider.

It's sad that you probably need an attorney to parse through the carefully crafted legalese designed to give ExpressScripts/Accredo control over your health care via information that it does not need to fulfill a prescription order, to maximize its ability to recover costs that may put your credit at risk, and to minimize its liability if services it performs have adverse results.
