Ultimate Romance is what to expect from a night out at Congress Restaurant. Chef David Bull is a talented chef who prepares the most delicious and elegant meals in the nation. Since they’ve opened, Congress has received nonstop accolades year after year, including 2013 Top 100 wine restaurants in the Nation by Wine Enthusiast. Chef Bull’s 3 course or 7 course dishes will win your heart…enjoy!

For my excitement and anticipation in finally making it here, the evening was a mild disappointment. The cause: almost entirely the food. This isn't too say it wasn't good, or that there weren't a few excellent dishes, but there were too many misses, in part due to an over-abundance of rock-salt. We had the prix fixe (the 3 course), plus a couple "enhancements", and a couple desserts. Highlights included the House Burrata, White Gulf Shrimp, and Paddelfish caviar. The latter was truly excellent, nearly sublime, and was probably my highlight of the night. However the carpaccio and tagliatelle carbonara were both ruined by over-salting (and I'm generally a salt fiend)--it's pretty much for this alone that I went with 3 instead of 4 stars. Also really enjoyed the Thai Tea Ice Cream dessert. Wine list: For a wine nerd, this is a so-so list. It's a hotel-style, please everyone kind of approach. You'll find everything from Cloud Bay & Dead Arm to Roagna's Solea & Vouette & Sorbee. Most wines are current releases. There's little depth anywhere, be it in region, grape, producer, or style. But, and this is a big one: the recommendations were excellent. And if I was going to be charitable, I'd say the sommelier has done a great job giving herself a broad palette to work with when it comes to recommending wines that suit an individual diner and their meal. Serivce: Excellent service, easily worth 4, if not 5 stars. Of the 3 components, food, wine & service, this stood-out the most. There were a few minor miss-steps, but overall really excellent. Most of all, it hit the balance of welcoming (friendly), relaxed (genuine), yet appropriately reserved (formal). That's hard to do, and I really enjoyed it. Given the great service, and some excellent dishes, it's unfortunate the food was uneven overall. I'll probably come back to try the tasting menu with pairings, and to give them another chance, but overall I can't recommend it based on the first visit.

One of the best restaurants in the state. Congress is very pricey but the quality of service and food are well worth every cent. Crisp white linens adorn the tables, dim modern light fixtures set an elegant tone, service is helpful yet unobtrusive and they anticipate your every desire. And the food. David Bull is not only one of the nicest guys in town but also one of the most talented. Every course is exquisitely prepared and presented. I'm torn for a favorite between the steak tartare surprisingly paired with fried oysters for an umami bomb of crunchy and smooth and the classic meat and potatoes pairing of the ribeye cap cooked to a perfect pink and served with the richest, creamiest pommes puree. The crowning jewel of the restaurant is the outstanding wine list put together by Congress' award winning sommelier June Rodil. Dining at Congress is truly a world class pleasure.

The bar, wedged in between Second Bar & Kitchen and Congress restaurant, oozes cool. I love the compact space, narrow bar and coveted booth seating, all in keeping with the prohibition era theme. Recently I discovered a favorite new cocktail, the "A Nise Anise." Fair warning, you'll need an affinity for anisette flavored beverages in order enjoy this drink as much as I do. The retro mustached bartender mixes it up with absinthe, bitters, lemon and ginger beer....and it's a very pretty drink to behold, tinged with a bright red splash. This place also wins a place in my heart for "Best Truffle Fries in Austin."
