If you’re driving in or through Denver this weekend and planned on using I-25 between Santa Fe and 6th Avenue, you’ll have to plan a new route. The Colorado DOT has announced plans to fully close lanes in both directions on Friday night, Saturday night, and all day Sunday.

This closure will allow crews to complete the “Gap Lane Project” which is designed to improve traffic flow temporarily, until more funding is available.

If you drive through the “Show Me” state, an August 5th ballot may bring some relief from toll booths. The proposal would basically raise the state sales tax by three-quarters of 1 % and use those funds for transportation infrastructure, eliminating the need for more toll roads.

Did you know that if you could connect all of the loads delivered by trucks in 2013, the chain would extend all the way to the moon and back … more than 11 times! If you did that in a space ship, it would take you 66 days or 1,584 hours!

If you’re driving at night for work or pleasure this weekend and planning on taking Interstate 35W in Bloomington or Burnsville, Minnesota, be sure to come up with an alternate route. The interstate will be closed at both ends this weekend, but it should re-open by Monday – if weather permits.

There will be an additional weekend closure sometime in October. According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, these closures are needed so crews can demolish the 94th Street bridge deck over I-35W.

The average price for a gallon of diesel has fallen, going down to $3.894 per gallon. This is the second consecutive week that prices have dropped, bringing the cost of diesel to its lowest point since January (excluding two weeks in June). Prices are still slightly higher than they were this time last year.

If there’s one thing that bugs most of us, it’s traffic. Even before the automobile was invented, it was plaguing our society. Back when horses did all the work, we were having so much trouble stopping for each other at intersections that in 1868, a British railroad engineer decided it was time to find a way to stop accidents and avoid traffic jams by inventing the world’s first traffic signal.

From bars to boxes, there have been quite a few modifications over the years (the first three-setting lights didn't come along until the 1920s), but the goal has been the same … to stop people from constantly running into one another!

Did you know that up until the 1700's a left hand driver’s seat was unheard of? This all changed when farmers in France and the U.S. began pulling their goods to the market using big rigs that were pulled by horses. Because these wagons (typically) did not have a place for the driver to sit, drivers would plop down on the rear left horse, with their right arm free to keep the team in shape for the journey. Thus, the left hand drivers seat was born!

When you drive for a living, seeing the country comes with the territory. While some of us may not always drive by, past, through, or to interesting places every time we get a job, it DOES happen, and it’s awesome!

The George and Wendy Show from Overdrive Online recently shared a picture on their Facebook page with the caption, “Where is the coolest place you’ve driven a truck?” The amount and diversity of responses they got show how fascinating driving a truck professionally can be.

Pierce County became Washington State’s second county this month to ban parking on residential streets in “unincorporated areas” for truckers.

Commissioners for Pierce County voted 7-1 for barring trucks with weights over 10,001 pounds and trailers that are longer than 20 feet from parking on residential streets between the hours of 10pm and 6am. Fines for parking in the area will also be raised.
