If you look up the words pretentious and mediocre in the dictionary. You'll find a picture of National next to said words. Head directly next door to the Ship, if you want good food, cheap beer and real down to earth people you can talk to without someone mentioning their wardrobe or what kind of car they drive!

Been here numerous times but last night was the last time I will ever return to this establishment, and that is sad for me to say since I own and operate a business across 17th from here. Here's why: The bouncer at the front door was friendly and flattering when he asked us for ID - even though he said, "Hi Guys, have a good time in there" to two other people who managed to walk right past us and inside without being ID'd at the same time. We chose two stools in the middle section and noticed that it was busy but probably 5 or 6 tables were vacant (so not really that busy) for a Thursday night. We also noticed a lack of servers. One approached us after we had been sitting there for over 10 minutes; now since I've been in the food services industry for many years, I know this is much longer than industry standard. After 20 minutes sitting down, our server takes drink orders from us. I guess she was busy, and that's fine. Before getting our drinks the server comes back and tells us, "I have to make sure you have ID." The lack of attention to us at this point had become annoying, but asking for ID a second time, when 1. we have been sitting there already 20 minutes, and 2. other patrons have not been asked for identification at all, is actually insulting. So we show her and continue to wait. Almost 30 minutes later, still no drinks on our table. But thank goodness we look under 18!! *two thumbs up* The meal we got was nothing special - the taste was bland and for a dish that supposedly came out of their oven, not at all piping hot. A gentleman who appeared to be a supervisor asked us how everything was, and we answered honestly, telling him it was OK. Truthfully, it seemed like he was annoyed that we had been honest with him. Again, being in the industry for years, I know that someone asking customers how food is tasting should be in a position to also apologize for the lack of taste. He offered to take it away but we politely declined. In the end, $3.50 was discounted from our bill for the lack of quality. All in all the service at National has gone down. Maybe they are focusing too much on expansion, as they have opened two additional locations (that I know of). The main thing here: we were left with a bad taste in our mouth, before even receiving drinks to the table. Lesson: Quality > Quantity

This review is for the location on 5 St W. Last night we were there as a group of 5. My girl friend placed an order and the waitress walked to the other side of the table. I got her attention and told her I wanted to order a second beer. Shortly after she left. I was puzzled but thought she forgot about me. When she returned I held the menu up to show her which one I wanted and she placed a beer in front of me saying "I thought you wanted the same as her". Well ... NO ... I politely pointed out that I wanted her to come back for my order. When there are 69 to try I would never order the same beer. It was clearly a mistake on her part but it was loud - no biggie. Just bring me what I want. I noticed this morning that she charged me for the beer I returned - the beer I never ordered. That's the level of customer service (from MaraleaM) that will prevent me from ever returning. As for the food, my fish tacos that initially came without tortilla wraps were mediocre at best. Two others enjoyed the prime rib even though it came without yorkshire pudding. EDIT - I spoke to the manager about this and it was resolved. He is a stand up guy.

Careful what you order here, Our table ordered some hot wings and got blinded by Chernobyl wings that left one person throwing up and the other wishing he washed his hands before using the bathroom afterwards. Both only had one bite. When discussed with the manager (or maybe he was the dishwasher), he was more interested in justifying the hot wings when all we were looking for was an apology. What a sad place with extremely poor customer service. Amatures.

Food is ok....the chicken pot pie has really gone downhill since they first opened....I will not order it anymore as it used to be my fav. Beer selection is the best. Nice patio in tue summer.

Not worth the hassle. The room is nice, and the food decent but as others have mentioned, The National is not worth it. Not worth the price and not worth the line up. The National costs approximately twice as much as The Ship and Anchor next door and the food is comparable - average Calgary pub food. Naturally, they seem to have hired the dumbest, hottest waitresses possible. A lot of guys like that so I can understand why. Personally, I prefer if my server can comprehend the difference between beer and cider. Sure, I enjoyed the night I spent with some friends at the National but I can't see why I would ever return when so many other bars have better wait staff, food, and prices. To end on a positive, they have an above average beer selection.

Excellent food and beer selection. The new 8th street location has an excellent roof top patio. Not to be missed.

My understanding is there are a couple locations in Calgary. The busy one that locals know of has one of the best overall bar/restaurant atmospheres in Canada.

National hasn't shared anything with you.

People are more likely to share with you if you add them to your circles.
