This review is for the location on 5 St W. Last night we were there as a group of 5. My girl friend placed an order and the waitress walked to the other side of the table. I got her attention and told her I wanted to order a second beer. Shortly after she left. I was puzzled but thought she forgot about me. When she returned I held the menu up to show her which one I wanted and she placed a beer in front of me saying "I thought you wanted the same as her". Well ... NO ... I politely pointed out that I wanted her to come back for my order. When there are 69 to try I would never order the same beer. It was clearly a mistake on her part but it was loud - no biggie. Just bring me what I want. I noticed this morning that she charged me for the beer I returned - the beer I never ordered. That's the level of customer service (from MaraleaM) that will prevent me from ever returning. As for the food, my fish tacos that initially came without tortilla wraps were mediocre at best. Two others enjoyed the prime rib even though it came without yorkshire pudding. EDIT - I spoke to the manager about this and it was resolved. He is a stand up guy.

Careful what you order here, Our table ordered some hot wings and got blinded by Chernobyl wings that left one person throwing up and the other wishing he washed his hands before using the bathroom afterwards. Both only had one bite. When discussed with the manager (or maybe he was the dishwasher), he was more interested in justifying the hot wings when all we were looking for was an apology. What a sad place with extremely poor customer service. Amatures.

My understanding is there are a couple locations in Calgary. The busy one that locals know of has one of the best overall bar/restaurant atmospheres in Canada.

Not worth the hassle. The room is nice, and the food decent but as others have mentioned, The National is not worth it. Not worth the price and not worth the line up. The National costs approximately twice as much as The Ship and Anchor next door and the food is comparable - average Calgary pub food. Naturally, they seem to have hired the dumbest, hottest waitresses possible. A lot of guys like that so I can understand why. Personally, I prefer if my server can comprehend the difference between beer and cider. Sure, I enjoyed the night I spent with some friends at the National but I can't see why I would ever return when so many other bars have better wait staff, food, and prices. To end on a positive, they have an above average beer selection.

Not worth the excessive wait in line; we were there early and even though we could clearly see empty tables inside, we were made to wait over 45 minutes in a small line. Once inside, there are no good import beers (none at all?) .. I tried one and it was far too gassy, needless to say we settled up quickly and moved on to Wurst -- a much better experience with real beer. Other notes; the sound system was terrible, ear-piercing highs, no bass, and really bad music. Food very limited choice, but what I had was just 'ok'. Don't waste your time with Nationals.
