Cosmetic Gum Surgery

Your gum tissue is like a framework that gives form and shape to the top of your tooth. An unattractive smile results when the health of the gum is compromised or the actual gum between your teeth becomes weak. Often due to poor hygiene (gum disease), you can actually begin to lose gum tissue. Cosmetic dentistry offers many cosmetic solutions such as composite resin bonding, crowns, and veneers to create a beautiful smile. These solutions are usually part of an overall methodology which may involve cosmetic gum surgery. Used to correct a ‘gummy smile’ (a considerable segment of your gum is exposed when you smile), cosmetic gum surgery is a procedure which lengthens your teeth from the neck of the tooth upwards. Your teeth then have the appearance of being longer and much less gum is visible smile.
The “Long in the Tooth” Smile – Cosmetic gum surgery, or periodontal plastic surgery, can correct almost any deformity or gingival problems preventing a great smile. As we age, our gums may diminish and recede which makes our teeth look longer. While this is often age-related, it can also occur due to a bad bite. Dr. Alan Howard and Dr. Yonatan Howard can correct this to such an degree, that you’ll have a very youthful appearing smile.
The “Gummy Smile” – This is a problem where your teeth appear to be too short. Gum sculpting can be a solution. To solve this, Dr. Howard uses a laser which removes the excessive tissue of your “gummy” smile, which then reveals more of your tooth.
Should you consider Cosmetic Gum Surgery
You should consult with Dr. Alan Howard about cosmetic gum surgery if you believe you have a”Gummy Smile” (small crown length), gum recession “long teeth”, an uneven gum line due to “short teeth”, gum loss or gums which appear to be collapsing (from missing teeth), dark or black areas between bridges, implants, crowns or teeth, or tooth sensitivity from receding gums.
Cosmetic Gum Surgery Procedures
There are two main cosmetic gum surgery procedures depending upon your current problem.
“Gummy Smile” (Excessive Gingival Display)
A “Gummy Smile” can occur as a result of teeth grinding, a short upper lip, or having a longer than typical upper jawbone. This smile has the appearance of small teeth and long gums.
“Long Tooth Smile” (Gum Recession)
Gum recession causes teeth to appear longer than normal. While “long teeth” may result in an unattractive smile, you should must also address the problems of root sensitivity and possible tooth loss. New advances in techniques and materials have resulted in substantial improvements in comfort, dependability and appearance.
There are two primary procedures for cosmetic gum surgery, depending on your problem.
Cosmetic gum surgery can be done to reduce the excess gum and bone. The removal of these tissues allows for normal sized teeth and for a normal gum line appearance by using an instrument, usually a laser, to remove the unwanted tissue. Typically Dr. Howard will prescribe an antibacterial mouth rinse to be used twice daily for two-weeks after your surgery.
As gums recede, teeth tend to look much “longer” than normal. Such gum recession subjects your sensitive root surface which can cause hot or cold foods and drinks a painful experience. Teeth can become loose as your gum recedes. The cosmetic gum surgery solution is basically when Dr. Howard removes tissue from the roof of your mouth and then grafts it onto your gum line. This tissue then strengthens sparse gums or fills in areas where your gums have receded. Typically Dr. Alan Howard will prescribe an antibacterial mouth rinse to be used twice daily for a two-week period following your surgery.
Advantages & Disadvantages of Cosmetic Gum Surgery
Advantages:
Healing is usually quick has successful results. Cosmetic gum surgery additionally improves the health of your gums. The procedure to correct receding gums may even reduce your tooth sensitivity to cold or hot foods or beverages while guarding your roots from decay and lessening further gum shrinkage.
Disadvantages:
Cosmetic gum surgery is surgery and as such has some ramifications. Surgery is often performed in segments under a local anesthetic – unless your entire mouth is undergoing this procedure at once, then a general anesthesia is typically used.

Does your tooth feel weak and vulnerable? Do you experience unusual sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures?

I was told about Dr. A. Howard's practice by a friend. It seems like going to the dentist has never been my favorite thing and I had some hope this would be different than my past experiences. After one visit I was completely blown away! This place doesn't look like a typical dental office and it doesn't smell like one either! LOL. It is super clean and tastefully furnished, massage chairs and flat screen TVs in every room help you relax and enjoy your office visit. I was impressed by the caring, warm, and friendly environment that emphasizes quality, patient education and professionalism. Dr. A. Howard is an amazing dentist with a gentle touch and great bed-side manners. I am very pleased with the results! My veneers look amazing! No one could actually believe that the veneers could look that natural. I getting a lot of compliments on my new beautiful smile! Thank you Dr. Howard!! You've changed my life! Couldn't imagine myself going to any other dentist ever again! I would highly recommend this practice to my friend and family

The Dental Office Encino personnel are always friendly, welcoming and caring. I feel secured and relaxed due to the experienced dental staff using ‘state of the art’ equipment combined with relaxing spa-like ambience to the office. I have been a patient for many years and even after moving out of the area a few years ago would not consider going anywhere else as they keep my teeth in excellent condition! Margaret Hughes
