"Pirke Avot + Art"
Join Rabbi Lori Forman-Jacobi and +Yona Verwer for an exploration of the text of Pirke Avot, an ethical treatise from the 2nd century with wisdom that is still applicable today.
4 Wednesdays in July, starting July 5th.
We will bring this ancient text to life through discussion, study, and a hands-on art project through which participants will each make their own book of Jewish ethics.

.Thank you Archie Rand for your wonderful comments about the Jewish Art Salon and I.

...He (Archie Rand) values the +Jewish Art Salon. “It shows that we are not isolated, disreputable, failed artists making Jewish chachkes,” he said. “And Yona Verwer is extraordinary. She has organized this group, which by now is fairly enormous" .....

“Yona is quietly and steadfastly courageous. She doesn’t think of herself as courageous, but she is. She is doing this with tremendous energy and education. She continues to pound the idea that it is important not only aesthetically but politically. Her devotion is fierce, and her organizational capacity is remarkable.”

"Yellow Benjy" Melendez has passed away. His extraordinary life as a Latin gang leader in the Bronx, who transformed his life upon discovering his family's Converso roots, was uniquely captured by Julian Voloj.

In 2011 I curated selections of Voloj's award-winning graphic novel Ghetto Brothers: From Warrior to Peacemaker into an exhibition at New York's Columbia / Barnard Kraft Center.

Now that we are entering Sukkot tonight, I am posting my painting "Ushpizot: Miriam". If you are in Los Angeles before December 19, check out the exhibit that features this work.

Traditionally we invite a different (male biblical) guest in the sukkah each night. My guests are biblical women. Miriam is associated with water: Miriam’s well, and leading women in celebration after crossing the Red Sea.

This painting, it’s shape and size approximating a tambourine, or the view looking down a round well, shows an abstract water image, penetrated by Miriam’s prophetess light.
