So I watched TNA Slammiversary, on the back of rave reviews, and the iMPACT event that followed it.
A couple of things before I start here.
1. Back in the days when TNA was just starting out, I loved TNA. Well, NWA TNA. Amazing matches between AJ Styles, Low Ki, Samoa Joe, Amazing Red, Christopher Daniels...Just brilliant.
2. I started hated TNA when it tried to compete. TNA has always been a poor-man's WCW, even down to the excellent X/Cruiserweight Division. It started becoming the place where WWE rejects go. From guys like Rhyno, to Christian, to the Dudley Boys.
3. TNA's younger talent was being overshadowed by WWE rejects. AJ Styles, Chris Daniels, Petey Williams etc...no, you had Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, even at one point the Nasty Boys!
4. Wacky match types ruined the flow. A hole in the top of the cage, that you have to climb through? A reverse battle royal? If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
So, the internet, and a bunch of friends, were going crazy about this PPV, Slammiversary. I figured hey, it's three hours of my life. Let's see what all the fuss is about. And it wasn't too bad.
Austin Aries vs. Samoa Joe - This was the type of match I enjoy most. Big spots, big bumps, and plenty of action. Very 'indy'
Kid Kash vs. Hernandez - This was exactly what I hated about TNA. Sloppy, old guys (Kash) ruining it. Couple of botches, and I blame Kash, because I've since seen better from Hernandez
Devon/Bischoff vs. Robbie E & T - Always been a fan of Devon/D-Von/whatever. Even in the Reverend D-Von days. Bischoff is shit. It seemed as those Robbie E & T were just there to put Devon and Bisch over, and I guess it kinda worked. For Devon
Anderson vs. Hardy vs. RVD - RVD is awful. What happened? Same old shit. Sure, I get that. That's your stuff, so you do it, but why keep doing it if you're only going to do it badly? Anderson and Hardy were decent, but Anderson stood out
James Storm vs. Crimson - Huge winning streak, and then he loses just so that James Storm can return. I understand a little more now that I've seen Impact, Storm is super over, but I wouldn't have had him beat Crimson. Oh well
Miss Tessmacher vs. Gail Kim - In my opinion, this was worse than most WWE women's wrestling. If TNA have more capable women, show them, because right now I see Gail Kim forced to work with someone who is no good. Tessmacher's performance on Impact did nothing to change my mind
Bully Ray vs. Joseph Park - I love this angle. Love it. Abyss's 'brother', going under the ring and changing...I just love it. I didn't like Abyss before, just a simple Kane monster-style ripoff, but he's playing this well, and that's all I need
AJ Styles/Kurt Angle vs. Christopher Daniels/Frankie Kazarian - This was good. I know it was just to advance the AJ/Dixie storyline, but I liked it. Plenty of Daniels/AJ/Kaz TNA-style (the old style which I enjoyed) wrestling, and Kurt Angle added a separate dynamic. Kurt's looking a bit old and ragged though
Bobby Roode vs. Sting - Get the old man out of the ring. No, TNA fans, that stupid 'You Still Got It' chant is wrong. So, please, shut up. Go home, Sting. Leave it to those who can provide a decent main event. Thanks. On the plus side, Roode looks like a Champion. Not a world champion, but a champion nonetheless. Nice robe. Wrestlers should wear robes. That's my final thought
