GDG Davao originally shared:

DevFests are large, community-run events that can offer speaker sessions across product areas, all-day hack-a-thons, code labs, and more. Each GDG DevFest will be inspired by, and uniquely tailored to, the needs of the hosting developer community.

Here, developers will be able to interact with Google engineers and local developers who work on the products and ask them questions. The engineers will also talk about the latest and greatest from Google, with best practices on how to improve the quality of web and mobile apps.

While no two events are exactly alike, each GDG DevFest will, at its core, be powered by a shared belief that when developers come together to exchange ideas, amazing things can happen.

2013 promises to be another great year for GDG Davao!

After seeing Google Devfests being held in Manila and Cebu, why not have one here in Davao?  I am making it my main goal to bring Google Devfest to Davao City sometime in June or July this year.

Aside from the devfest, I'm planning mini-events such as meetups, Map-ups and hackathons every month or so beginning this February.  Watch out for announcements on those on our official page.

Thanks for your support!

Startup Weekend + GDG
By harnessing experts from local GDGs, Pre-Startup Weekend bootcamps will focus on teaching people about Google technologies like Android, AppEngine, HTML5, and different Google APIs that can help them work faster and be more productive during their Startup Weekend project.

During a Startup Weekend there isn't a lot of time for attendees to learn and implement new technologies. By leveraging experienced and knowledgeable members to teach Startup Weekend attendees, we can teach developers new technologies, platforms, services, or APIs.

What do I need to prepare?
Please bring your laptops, usb/wifi internet sticks and extension cords. Also, in order to prepare for the weekend, we would recommend downloading all the necessary IDEs, packages, etc. from the developer sites:

Android - http://developer.android.com
Chrome - https://developers.google.com/chrome
AppEngine - https://developers.google.com/appengine
Google Developers - https://developers.google.com/

As the manager of GDG Davao, I am pleased to present a summary of our activities for the past year 2012.

We kicked things off with a Google Apps Developer Challenge (GADC) meetup in August 11, 2012.  Having been newly-appointed as GDG Davao's manager, GADC was a great way to get a sense of the community and strengthen its membership.  It was fairly well-attended with about 30 members in attendance.  Google Japan's +Dan Delima and fellow GDG managers +anne olvido  and +Jomar Tigcal flew over to Davao City to tackle different topics on app development.

Next up was the Pre-Startup Weekend Bootcamp held in November 3, 2012, a week before Startup Weekend Davao of which I was also a co-organizer.  GDG Zamboanga's +Jerome Locson and +Rafael Oca were around to guide participants about developing their app ideas as well as share techniques and tips about the pitching process. Most, if not all, participants ended up joining Startup Weekend the week after.

In December 1-2, 2012, we held the Sanitation Hackathon, a social good hackathon in association with the World Bank that aims to develop open technology to help address the sanitation challenges we face in our own locale. The winning tools developed during this hackathon will be used to overcome these challenges and will be rewarded by the World Bank.  Our event was supported by developer +Pogz Ortile the academe's +Ruben Canlas Jr. and Maynilad's Ms. Rodora Gamboa.  The hackathon was held simultaneously in five other cities around the Philippines - Baguio, Bacolod, Cebu, Makati and Zamboanga.  With over 50 entries presenting via Google Hangout from all over the country, the hackathon was a huge success.  Our very own Team Comfort, who pitched their app "Nature's Call", won as the overall champion.

Let me take this opportunity to again thank our members and friends who have been so supportive of our endeavors.  Looking forward to another year of success this 2013!
