halting problem : Dev v Ops

Initially, I decided not to post this article, even if it deals with a GUADEC presentation, in the section that gets syndacated on Planet GNOME; I didn't want to be inappropriately confrontational, and I didn't want this to be picked up as the position of GNOME, my employer, or essentially anybody but myself.

Lapo Calamandrei: +Florian Müllner the lwn article comments are a pretty depressing read, I think most people there is just afraid of losing thier tiny share of power...

Lapo Calamandrei: Some are, but what I see is mostly people not acknowledging the current model doesn't work, which means refusing any kind of discussion.

Michael Hill: Wild... I have a Wind sim card in my phone. When Shaw bought the company, they rebranded it to Freedom which is kind of the opposite of what it means to be absorbed by one of the Big Four.

What would have happend if Canonical developed stuff in a more open way, without the infamous CLA and working upstream with projects they rely on? It's sad they're pratically exiting the desktop market, I hope they (and everyone else) learnt a lesson here.

Lapo Calamandrei: +Lubomir Rintel well the desktop market is a difficult one for sure, which is why I think sharing the development costs could have been a better idea then going their own way.

Lubomir Rintel: Not sure. Red Hat is considerably better at community involvement and collaboration yet their general purpose desktop market share is probably not too big.

I believe it's rather difficult to offer something the home desktop user is willing to pay for (after they paid their Microsoft or Apple tax when buying the machine with OS preinstalled).

Given how popular Ubuntu desktop is among the technical users, my hopes are that they are not withdrawing too much manpower from their workstation distro. If they talent Ubuntu has joins efforts on the same desktop software other Linux distros use we may all benefit from this change.

(Disclosure: I work for Red Hat, those who don't might find me biased.)

The bad taste exploit (quite a good name, for how the thing actually evolved), for some weird reason got a lot of (kind of bad and misinformed) press coverage (pretty much blaming gnome), I wonder why the same didn't happen for +Carlos Soriano and +Bastien Nocera blog post related to that particular issue:
