California Institute of Technology's baseball team ended a 228-game losing streak Saturday with a 9-7 victory over Pacifica -- the Beavers' first win in nearly 10 years.

After dropping the first game of its season-opening doubleheader 5-0, Caltech won the second behind a complete-game seven-inning effort by freshman Daniel Chou. Caltech hadn't won since Feb. 15, 2003.

"It was almost as if they had been there before," first-year coach Matthew Mark said.

It was a non-conference game, though, and Caltech, mainly a Division III participant, has not won a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest since 1988 -- a span of 463 games.

Caltech's men's basketball team ended a 310-game conference losing streak in 2011, while the women's volleyball team ended a 56-match losing streak last year.

A pretty great comment:

"Carl Pavano's career earnings according to Baseball Reference: Career to date (may be incomplete) $71,562,500. Carl, it's time to invest in a snow blower."

The really shocking part of this story is that the MLB draft has a 43rd round.

Last night I saw a man on a bike get hit by a car.  They took him to the hospital and we waited and talked to the police and everything.  Does anyone know if there's a way that I can find out if he's ok?

Dear Chip Kelly,

We'll see you again in three years after your offense gets destroyed in the NFL.

President Obama on Football Safety

"You read some of these stories about college players who undergo some of these same problems with concussions and so forth and then have nothing to fall back on. That's something that I'd like to see the NCAA think about."

I like President Obama and I have no problem with certain changes in the NCAA and NFL to improve players' safety.  However, let's be clear about one thing: college football players have nothing to fall back on except for a college education that, for many of them, is free.

This is awesome

As part of the promotion in late May, the first 1,000 fans will get an empty bobblehead box, there will be a pretend kiss cam for fans to kiss their imaginary friends and there will be an imaginary food fight in the kids' area, as well as an air guitar contest.

I learned something today.  Never do a google image search while you're eating.  It's not worth the risk.

Introduction
Welcome to Google+ and welcome to my profile.  I love it here and so will you.

The Basics: I was born in Ohio and I've lived here my whole life (with the exception of two months).  I went to college at the University of Akron for my BS and MS in mathematics.  In the fall I will be going to the University of Oregon to pursue my PhD.  In addition to a mathematician, I am a musician, a tech junkie, a sports fan, an athiest, somewhat of a libertarian (though I lean towards democrat), and a light video gamer.  I also really like eating pizza, watching TV, and spending time with nature.

My Posts: I cover a broad range of topics including mathematics, sports, civil rights, and comedy.  I also like to share some of the interesting and weird parts of the internet.  I do tend to have strong opinions on a small smattering of topics and I am vocal about them at times.  I welcome discourse but if you have a starkly different viewpoint than me and you can't handle opposing opinions then you probably won't like me in your stream.  I'm pretty mild when things are civil, but I love to argue and I have a pretty light trigger when provoked.

Mathematical Training: I have a strong background in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, and applied mathematics but I currently work in theoretical mathematics and that's where I plan to stay.  I have a decent undergraduate training in a lot of areas, but my graduate work is in group theory (specifically in character theory of finite groups).  I don't really have a specific plan for the future, but I'm doing what I love and rolling with the punches.

Circling: I work very hard to make sure that my stream functions the way that I want it to function.  That means that if you circle me and I don't circle you back...well it's nothing personal.  I don't care about how many followers I have so if it offends you that I don't automatically circle you back then feel free to uncircle me.  The bottom line is that this isn't Facebook and we don't want it to be Facebook; the fact that relationships on Google+ aren't required to be reciprocal is one of the best features of this service.  I'm here to engage with people, so if you want me to circle you then engage.

Comment Moderation: Don't let anyone tell you that moderation is censorship because it's not.  I will moderate the comments on my threads as needed in an effort to keep things civilized.  Some people moderate to keep a thread on track with the original topic but I don't do that.  Some people (unfortunately) remove any comments that disagree with their position and I don't do that either.  I remove comments that are unjustifiably hateful and I remove blatant trolling or spamming.  Having said all that, anyone is welcome to engage in my threads but you have to accept the fact that I can remove comments or block people whenever I want (which is the same risk I take when engaging in your threads).

The foregoing prohibitions also apply to your employee(s), agent(s), student(s) or any personnel under your direction or control. I wholeheartedly support peaceful and civil protests, demonstrations, freedom of speech and other various forms of expression, and the democratic process.

Thanks to Marc Belley who thanked Neil Barnsley, who thanked Stan Kain for the text of the privacy notice.
