Call me a fence-sitter but I use the Oxford comma when it's needed and avoid it when it isn't. If we called it the 'occasional comma' perhaps there wouldn't be so much controversy.

Typographically, I think a comma before 'and' looks very stylish!

An infographic from +OnlineSchools.com provides a concise history of the Oxford comma, probably the most debated piece of punctuation in the history of the English language.

My personal vote is 'no.' My personal writing communicates 'no.' My academic writing communicates 'yes' because I write for and in American institutions.

Irony alert! The PR department at Oxford University no longer uses the Oxford comma (although Oxford University Press still does.)
