Death Marched Beyond My Dreams

Death's bony fingers had pilfered my dreams. He touched them, stealing every scene from me and turning them into nightmares. Innocence was taken, and there was nothing I could do about it. Dreams about family, about people I had only known through their creative works, had been tainted. Death's ghosts hovered around them. Their presence darkened every corner. Shadows followed us all, but they were not our own. These were spirits, our lifelines. Death had measured our days, and only my eyes were witnesses. My dreams, and the people within them, were the playthings of a bedeviled mind.

I can still feel my heart race whenever I think about it. All those half-covered, shadowed faces sauntering towards their doom. People just living their lives unaware of the waiting reaper whose minions trailed their every step, pushing them ever so closer to the scythe craving to carve out their souls. I can see it in my mind’s eye, blurry yet clear enough that I understand the simplicities involved. I’m not fooled; I’ve been chosen to experience this. Suffering alone, I get to behold everyone around me—including myself—walk to the toll of a bell unheard. Shuffling like zombies, the herd danced along to the march of the living dead.

Halloween Short Stories

I wrote this last October, and it's one of those I liked enough to put it in my "Will edit it again after enough time away from it" pile. Comments welcomed. #halloweenshortstories #Fiction

Baby in the Bath Tub

“Somethin’s wrong wit’ Mama,” Charlotte blurted out, head buried in her hands, moping at the kitchen table. “She’s possessed! A she devil. It ain’t right!”

“No, she ain’t.” Joseph replied, tears crystalizing in his eyes.

“Somethin’s not right, Joe! We can’t deny it no more. Don’t you remember what she said to us?”

Joseph nodded; he did remember. They were at the kitchen table, the same one they were at now. His mother, sister, and he were carrying on like old friends. Nothing out of the ordinary. Casual conversation dominated the airwaves: talks of local news, daily events, and gossip flowed from ear to ear. Then Charlotte got up and made her way to the sink to wash her dish. His mother looked at her for a second, looked down, and then into the living room before returning her gaze to Charlotte. That’s when she shocked them. That’s when she spoke those words into existence that would come back to haunt Charlotte.

“You lost that baby in the bath,” she said. Time froze. It was the lack of emotion that really set the tone. No one reacted for a few seconds. How were they to? Joseph held his breath, waiting for everything to explode.

“What, mama?” Charlotte giggled, unsure of what was going on.

Halloween Short Stories

I wanted to start this earlier, but eh,  had things going on. Anyway, to fit the holidays, I'm going to reshare some old stories that vaguely fit the spirit of the upcoming "holiday" of Halloween. Enjoy and comments are welcomed. #HalloweenShortStories #Fiction

Game Theory: Submission & Sacrifice

Shards of green splattered onto the stark white floors, coloring every few inches with sharp, glimmering glass. Black sludge splotched the sky blue walls as if it had come fresh from a shot down alien’s body. An alarm penetrated the stale, distilled air, stirring up any sleeping creature with one or more working ears. An incident had taken place. The sanctuary of those who watched had been tainted, and the world was no longer safe. Something had escaped, and it was viral, and it was deadly. It was fear where none used to exist.

Feet pounded against the metal floors of narrow corridors, searching through small windows of passing doors to make sure each captive was still behind their isolated cells. Nothing had moved, no one had fled, yet panic wafted through those in the know, sending them into a paranoid frenzy. Those who watched stomped up and down the halls, their frequency increasing with their caution. Every noise was analyzed; every ounce of known information was scanned and rechecked, but nothing calmed their nerves. Something had worked against them. They had become targeted. For the first time in many years, they were not on top of the events happening around them.
