What is there that to say about Gray's that hasn't already been said? These crisp, salty dogs aren't haute cuisine by any stretch of the imagination, but instead represent the paragon of New York City hot dogs, only with extra crunch from the charred bits of the flat top, and without any risk of exposing yourself to whatever mysteries lie inside those vendor dog cart water tanks. The standard (and arguably best) way to eat these is two at a time combined with a big cup of papaya juice, better known as the Recession Special. At five bucks, it's hard to come up with a better way to get a quick and cheap meal in the Upper West Side area. Definitely a must-visit if you're in the city for the first time.

Definitely a NYC institution and the only one left of this chain. It is a must for anyone visiting NYC. Stock up on Hot Dogs here and walk a few avenues over to get into Central Park and Strawberry Fields or. SummerStage it is definitely worth it instead of getting cart hotdogs (dirty water hotdogs).

Absolutely great dogs. Visiting here from Calif. Had a chile cheese dog...loved it. No seating and tiny inside but that's ok......great food and drinks!

They raised the price of the recession special to $5.95! But otherwise it's not changed for a long time. And I consider that a good thing. I love a late night dong and drink from this place.

A mainstay in NYC. You really can't beat the recession special at the cost of below $5. You get 2 hot dogs and a drink. My go to is 2 dogs with kraut and a papaya shake. Great snap to the hot dog and wonderful flavor. The papaya shake was also very refreshing. Great for a quick snack or meal and a refreshing beverage especially in the summer.

recession special! :) 2 dogs and a drink. good value for good food. OK it is not frankfurter sausage you get in Germany/Austria or some eastern Europe countries.. but it is very good. and it is a MUST when you are in NY. I would only suggest them to offer plain orange juice in this special.. not only those mango-coconut-avocado-penguin-see weed mix..

best hotdogs in NYC, prices went up but *part of what they were known for* it's still a great place. it seems as if they under repairs which might be a good thing since it's always so cramped & packed full of people.
