Here's the must-read political piece of the weekend. Jonathan Chait explains in terrifying detail precisely why and how the Tea Party rebellion represents nothing less than, well, a true rebellion: a direct, imminent threat to our system of government -- and why, therefore, it is essential that Obama give them nothing -- absolutely nothing -- even at the pain of a debt ceiling default. The Tea Party Caucus isn't in denial, which has been awfully easy for many of us progressives to assume: in fact, they would appear to have a very clear-eyed view of the reality of American politics right now, which is that under our present democratic electoral system and in view of remorselessly negative demographic trends, their prospects for getting their way through electoral victory or personal persuasion are, um, nil. Thus: extortion. It cannot be allowed to succeed. Obama owes nothing less than complete victory to future presidents and to all the American people, including the many millions of mainstream Republicans who didn't vote for him and will never vote for a Democrat, but nonetheless support the American electoral process that ensures our freedom. Future Republican presidents cannot be expected to govern under annual threat of economic Armageddon, either.

Stand strong, Mr. President. GIVE THEM NOTHING.

Okay, playtime for the children is almost done, time for the grownups to take over again. Apparently Boehner has privately told his GOP colleagues that he will not allow America to default, that he will use Democratic votes to pass a debt ceiling increase if it comes to that. Thank God, but no surprise. He's been letting the Tea Party clowns blow off some steam, but push comes to shove, there are enough sane Republicans, including Boehner, that the idiot caucus will not be allowed to do major damage.

Stand firm, Mr. President. Give the Republican extortionists nothing. Nada. Zilch. Zip. Let them shut down the government, force America into default, whatever they're allowed to do. Their power lies only in destruction now.
