Whispers in Opacity

The Critique:

An overwhelming feel of softness permeates this photograph. The person behind the glass, although barely visible, is the strong point of focus. He is fixed in time and well anchored by the vertical post at his back. Another shadow on the left hints that he isn’t alone. But it’s the muted colors, gemlike and dreamy, that make the biggest impact on my eye. They form pathways for my eye – they collect in masses of shape that weight the photograph – they are the balancing support for what we think we know.

What I have learned:

Movement behind frosted glass is like a magnet. I have to stop and look and shoot.

Shooting Swee

The Critique:

The stairway leads my eye but is quickly overtaken by brighter and more dramatic sights. Protruding building facades gleam in brilliant light – as they swirl in a pattern that resembles flight. Steely cool colors compliment an almost menacing feel that emanates from the structure. But there is hope in the warmth of the sun that touches surfaces here and there. Spatial relationships are very clear. Things are well balanced. The small touch of nature – the tree – the human – puts it all in perspective.

What I had learned:

Shooting with Swee is an adventure. Shooting +Swee Oh is always a treat!

A Little Happiness

The Critique:

The expression says it all and makes an immediate impact with its story – technology does indeed connect us is some wonderful ways. Perspective adds drama as it joins spectacular light that reveals superb details. There is nice vertical pull in this portrait framing choice. Spatial relationships are strong as is the balance within the frame. It could have gone B&W but I chose to keep color – an added component of the happiness of a sunny day.

What I had learned:

Try different perspectives.

Here He Comes

The Critique:

Here he comes – from both directions. An intersection of reflections takes the ordinary and turns it into something with extraordinary impact. My eye just has to investigate the dueling objects and make sense of the scene. The light is fabulous as it dapples the patterned sidewalk and illuminates the entire frame showing off every detail. Strong horizontal lines knit the opposing sides together almost seamlessly. Nice depth of focus lets me clearly see the difference in textures between the ‘real’ world and the one that’s reflected. Spatial relationships, although initially puzzling, are clear and fun to discover.

What I had learned.

When I see the same cars going in opposite directions at the same moment in time, I pay attention.

Shaklee Building, SF

The Critique:

Columns of steel and glass reach into the sky in dramatic fashion. The gleaming surface and intricate patterns catch and hold my attention as details multiply in the glass surface. The upsweep diagonal lines take me for a merry visual ride. I love the vivid contrast – the curves and angles that oppose each other. She’s gorgeous in all her glory and here she presents herself in a lovely abstract fashion.

What I had learned:

Keep going back to places I’ve been and find new vision.

SFMOMA Perspective 8513

The Critique:

Narrow pathways of stairs squeeze into negative space providing a passageway for the human figure. Perspective and spatial relationships are obvious only because of his presence. I love how light draws my eye and welcomes this explorer as he comes out of the shadows and into brightness. Wonderful vertical pull is present as color and shape tug my eye upward. The neutral palette keeps emphasis on shape and design. It would be a very good black and white but I like the reality that the touches of color add to the scene.

What I had learned.

Keep looking. SFMOMA has so many visual gifts to photograph that it’s always a treat to see what I find.

Painterly Walkers

The Critique:

Wisps of color and whimsical lines portray the people through the motion filter of ICM (intentional camera movement). The pattern of arcs makes a powerful impact. Rich and bold colors compliment the photograph. The bold vertical column on the right anchors the shot. It’s all about impressionism – hints of reality seen through an artist’s eye. Done in camera, this is what the sensor captured in 1/6th of a second with the camera moving in an upward arc.

What I had learned:

Ordinary scenes can become magical with a little imagination and a dance with the camera.
