As with most people that don't know or understand wells and drilling.  IF the well was an open hole drilling once they reached 500 feet they would need to cement in upper casing.  Usually a pipe at least 12 or more inches.  They could then open hole drill down to a few thousand feet and then set a 7 inch casing.  The rest of the hole down to 10,000 feet would be uncased.  You can't drill down too far without casing or you will collapse the well.  There is no way a well would cause this as once you hit the top of the gas zone you would have a blow out.  Since no blow out no gas was there.  Its just nature at its finest.
